CARSON CITY – Nevada state Assemblyman Ed Goedhart, R-Amargosa Valley, said today he will voluntarily file his campaign contribution and expense report before early voting begins to give the public adequate time to review the information.
Goedhart, who is running for re-election, said he is joining with Secretary of State Ross Miller in filing his report well ahead of the deadline now in state law.

CARSON CITY – Rep. Dean Heller, R-Nev., said today he believes the race between U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and GOP challenger Sharron Angle will come down to 5,000 votes.

Carson City Sheriff Kenny Furlong sent Carson Now his response to Guimont's comment that was posted after a gang-related shooting incident two weeks ago. Carson Now contacted Guimont and verified that the comment did in fact come from him.

CARSON CITY – Assembly Minority Leader Pete Goicoechea said today Nevada voters should be asked to expand the state sales tax to include food purchases as a way to raise revenue and broaden the tax base.
But any such revenue hike should be accompanied by a reduction in the state’s regressive business taxes, he said.

CARSON CITY – Nevada Rep. Shelley Berkley Thursday defended the right of mosque supporters to build their facility near Ground Zero in New York City, saying she supports religious freedom for all.

CARSON CITY – Senate Minority Leader Bill Raggio, R-Reno, today criticized a fund-raising “pay to play� letter sent out recently by Majority Leader Steven Horsford, saying it borders on an ethics violation.
“I have always avoided that kind of a fundraiser,� he said. “I think it is inappropriate. The perception is that to have access to a leader or chairman you have to pay. I think that sends a terrible message.�

CARSON CITY – Gov. Jim Gibbons today appointed his chief of staff to serve on a panel that oversees planning and environmental issues at Lake Tahoe.

Carson City District Attorney Neil Rombardo, in conjunction with the Carson City Sheriff's Office and other city agencies, kicked off an effort today to battle abuse of elderly and vulnerable citizens.

Speaking at the Carson City Senior Center, Rombardo related his own positive experiences with his grandmother as a motivation for the effort to make sure senior citizens in this community have access to help to escape abusive situations.

CARSON CITY – A panel of lawmakers today approved a $20,000 appropriation to commission an official portrait of out-going Gov. Jim Gibbons.
The request by the Department of Cultural Affairs for the funding from the Interim Finance Committee’s contingency fund was approved without comment by lawmakers.
The request was submitted after Gibbons lost his re-election bid in the June primary to GOP challenger Brian Sandoval. Gibbons will leave office as the state’s 28th governor in early January. A new governor will be picked by voters in November.

CARSON CITY – A plan to close Nevada State Prison in phases over the next several months will be on hold for further consideration by the Board of Prison Commissioners next month, but Gov. Jim Gibbons said today that he will continue to authorize transfers of inmates for safety and security reasons.

CARSON CITY – The Republican Assembly Caucus has launched a media suite to keep Nevadans engaged and informed about lawmaker activities as the general election campaign season gets under way.

CARSON CITY – Lame duck Gov. Jim Gibbons not only fell short in campaign contributions in his recent primary loss to Brian Sandoval, but donations to his legal defense fund have dried up as well.

CARSON CITY – The Republican Assembly Caucus has elected Assemblyman Pete Goicoechea as its new minority leader, replacing the retiring Assemblywoman Heidi Gansert.
Goicoechea, R-Eureka, was the unanimous choice of the 14-member caucus.
Gansert, R-Reno, is not running for re-election to the Assembly.
