VIRGINIA CITY — With the primary election just around the corner, accusations of rape have surfaced in the Storey County Sheriff's race. Sheriff Gerald Antinoro is squaring off against two of his own deputies in his re-election bid. But the fact that they all work together has not stopped this race from getting downright ugly.

Assembly candidate rejects Carson City GOP vetting, Central Committee explains process

A Republican candidate for Assembly District 40 said he rejects the idea of being vetted by the Carson City Republican Central Committee, a policy the committee has in its bylaws.

Candidate Jed Block stated earlier this week that he was informed that a "secret Republican Vetting Committee" asked to see him in a closed meeting. He called the committee "a handful of self-promoted political bosses" who would "inform, if not instruct, the so-called rank-and-file how to think, how to vote."

Proposed 20/20 Group Compromise

Let's ignore the 80/800 group of businesses in Carson City, for the moment, and consider meeting the 20/20 group in a compromise over the sales tax increase to pay for their proposed ten million dollar corridor improvements. Why not have them put up half the money of $5 Million ($250K each) and the city can match their investment for the remaining half? Let's all compromise and meet them halfway. If they are willing to put up their money, where our taxes are to be spent, then let hear it for compromise.

Deep Thoughts, Cheap Thoughts and Bonbons

The New Year has begun, and quite surprisingly the past year has gone by extremely fast. Unsurprisingly, rarely did anything surprise me during my first year as a Supervisor. Granted there are moments when one believes he/she is making the right and prudent decision, but I did learn that regardless of how one votes, there will always be consequences.

What is most popular in the public opinion could and often does influence and create pressure for city staff to revitalize their position on the issues of the day, and then they may or may not make an agenda item for that subject matter.

Carson City District Court Judge Jim Wilson announces re-election run

Judge Jim Wilson will seek re-election as district court judge. Judge Wilson was elected to the First Judicial District Court, which serves Carson City and Storey County, in 2008.

Judge Wilson graduated from Carson High School, the University of Nevada, Reno, and McGeorge School of Law. He was a deputy district attorney and then Elko County District Attorney. He was in private practice in Carson City for 22 years before taking the bench.

Judge James T. Russell to seek re-election to Carson City District Court bench

Carson City District Court Judge James Todd Russell has announced he will run for re-election. Judge Russell was appointed to the bench by Nevada Gov. Kenny Guinn in December 2006. He was then elected on Nov. 7, 2008, being unopposed for a six-year term commencing in January 2009.

Judge Russell grew up on Carson City, attended Carson High School and graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno in 1969, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration. From 1969 to 1971, he served in the U.S. Army as a 1st Lieutenant.

Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong announces fourth term run

Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong will run for a fourth term as the capital city's top law enforcement officer, announcing his 2014 re-election intentions Tuesday.

In what Furlong described as three "politically quiet but challenging years," crime statistics have trended downward since the 2010 election, which is remarkable given Carson City's economic climate as it continues to deal with the effects of a deep, prolonged recession.

Sandoval Will Seek Re-Election as Governor

Gov. Brian Sandoval informed reporters on Tuesday that he will finish his four-year term and seek another four-year term after that.

However, he did not indicate whether or not he would serve out a full four years if re-elected.

Sandoval’s announcement confirms recent political speculation that he might challenge Democratic Sen. Harry Reid in the 2016 election.

Nevada lawmakers may stick to status quo in quest to play nice

Nevada legislators launch their biennial session Monday facing the possibility that little will actually happen.
Gov. Brian Sandoval, who has been a cautious head of state, is facing re-election and might have higher political aspirations, making him loath to propose any sweeping, controversial changes. Democratic leadership is afraid to admit they want to raise taxes, and they don’t have the two-thirds majority to raise money by themselves.

Envying The Fun In The Editor's Office

The editor must have been enjoying some holiday cheer. Sometimes I envy the guy, he sure has a fun job. Consider the last few postings. 1. ...and deservedly so! | Carson City Nevada News - Carson Now http://carsonnow.org/reader-content/11/23/2012/and-deservedly-so  Absolutely right. As the author says, there is no cure for willful ignorance. Before I give in to the temptation of pointing to this letter as one obvious illustration of that dictum, let me ask the following questions:

CARSON CITY – The Nevada state Senate will remain in Democratic control following Tuesday’s election after three Republican candidates won victories in five closely contested races, one short of the number needed for a change of power.

Heller Says Online Gaming Bill Should Not Be Political Football In Run-up To General Election

CARSON CITY – U.S. Sen. Dean Heller today said online gaming legislation critical to the future of Nevada’s economy should be removed from the world of politics so partisan fights don’t “poison the water” for the bill’s future in Congress.

Heller, interviewed on the Nevada NewsMakers television program, said the legislation is too important to be subjected to political fights between himself and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid between now and the Nov. 6 general election.

On Ron Knecht and the PUC

Despite more than 10 years of outstanding service as a PUC senior economist, my friend Nevada Regent Ron Knecht was fired in March by the PUC bureaucrats, with no reason given and no announcement made.

This story was then intentionally leaked to the press, so that it would be reported just before voting started in Mr. Knecht’s primary re-election campaign. Ron won the primary handily, because voters are very aware his outstanding record, fine character, and dedication to public service.
