North America’s Oldest Dated Petroglyphs at Winnemucca Lake, Nevada

Gene Hattori, Curator of Anthropology, will present a Frances Humphreys Lecture on petroglyphs from Winnemucca Lake, Nevada that date to between 10,500 and 14,800 years in age. The lecture is Thursday, Oct. 22, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Nevada State Museum in Carson City.

Senator Square: Laptops for Everyone

All 2,300 Carson High School students will each receive a laptop during the week of Oct. 5-9 to be used at school and at home to enhance their learning opportunities. Beginning Monday at 7:45 a.m. and going throughout the day, all students will go to the library to receive their laptop. This process will be repeated again Tuesday through Thursday.

A lot of people are asking themselves and the society in which we live this question hours after a fatal mass killing at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon.

I’m a native Oregonian, born and raised just an hour or two north of Roseburg. My parents called this mill city, situated between the North and South branches of the Umpqua River, home for a few years a decade back. I know the area fairly well. One of my favorite places to visit was Wildlife Safari just a few miles down the road in Winston.

A 53-year-old Reno man who was panhandling Wednesday at South Carson Street near Spooner Junction, was arrested on a felony fugitive from justice warrant, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Forecasters update coming El Nino: 95 percent likely, will weaken through spring 2016

A U.S. government weather forecaster on Thursday said El Nino conditions would gradually weaken through the northern hemisphere spring after peaking in late fall or early winter.

The National Weather Service's Climate Prediction Center said the likelihood that El Nino conditions would persist through the northern hemisphere winter was about 95 percent, up from a more than 90 percent chance in last month's forecast.

CCAI Nevada Neighbors: Craft Now

Her illustrated talk, “Craft Now” is the next in CCAI’s Nevada Neighbors series. The talk will take place at 7pm at the BRIC, 108 E Proctor St, Carson City. There will be an informal reception for Ms. Nathan preceding the event at 6:15pm. The presentation and reception are free, and the public is cordially invited.

Recall: Nevada health officials warn of cucumbers tainted with salmonella

Seven Nevadans are among nearly 300 people nationwide who have reportedly been sickened with salmonella by cucumbers sold under the name and label of A&W Limited Edition Pole Crown Cucumbers, Nevada health officials announced Friday. The company, San Diego-based Andrew and Williamson Fresh Produce, has voluntarily recalled all cucumbers sold between Aug. 1 through Thursday, Sept. 3.

Carson City area weather for Labor Day weekend calls for breezy, cool conditions

While fall doesn’t officially start until Sept. 23, weather around Carson City and the Sierra will take a noticeable turn to the cool side over the Labor Day holiday weekend, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.
A cold front will move through the Sierra and western Nevada Friday bringing strong winds and much cooler temperatures for the weekend.

Lorene "Jerri" Koon, 93, of Greeley, Colorado, long time resident of Carson City, passed away at Bonell Good Samaritan Center on July 8, 2015 from complications of dementia. She was born December 25, 1921 in Holton, Kansas to Sid Jones and Parazida (Pippin) Jones. she was predeceased by her husband, Harold Koon. She is survived by sons Earl Isabell (Lee) of Texas, and Bruce (Darlene) Isabell of Oregon, and grandsons John Shober (Belle) of Greeley, Colorado, Ed Shober of Leadville, Colorado, Steve Isabell and Sam Isabell of Portland, Oregon, and James and Allen Isabell also of Oregon.

A U.S. government weather forecaster on Thursday raised the likelihood that El Nino conditions would last into the Northern Hemisphere's early spring to 85 percent, boosting the probability that drought-stricken California could see increased rains.

UNR Seismological Laboratory monitors earthquake activity in far northwest Nevada

The earthquake activity that began in July 2014 in the Sheldon Wildlife Refuge in far northwest Nevada is continuing to shake residents. University of Nevada, Reno seismologists are monitoring the on-going activity that includes three earthquakes larger than magnitude 4.0 since mid-July, including the largest of these, a magnitude 4.6 on July 16.

Heavy smoke around Carson City coming from California fires

Thick smoke has moved into the Carson City, Carson Valley areas this afternoon. There is no single fire contributing to this, rather many large wildfires and wildfire complexes in northern California, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

I admit to spending a considerable amount of time each day on the Internet, while browsing at a number of my favorite websites. The browsing is very informative and believe it or not, I do learn something new every day by visiting those websites.
