CCAI Tow'ring High Exhibition
The Capital City Arts Initiative [CCAI] announces its exhibition, "Tow'ring High", by artist Deon Reynolds at the Carson City Community Center's Sierra Room from July 8 – November 10, 2015. Community Center is located at 851 E. William Street, Carson City. The show's title comes from the state song, "Home Means Nevada."
The exhibition is free and the public is cordially invited. The Sierra Room is open to the public during Carson City official meetings including every other Thursday 8am - 5pm, and most weeknights Monday - Thursday, 5pm - 8pm. For the City's Sierra Room meeting schedule, call 775.887.2290 or check online at http://www.carson.org/index.aspx?page=14
Deon Reynolds' "Tow'ring High" exhibition presents his elegant black and white landscape photographs along with his sense of irony. The photos give the viewer a chance to reflect on small moments of human activity out in Nevada's Big Empty: familiar vistas brought into close range with a wink and a nod.
Deon said about his photography processes, "Every image in this show was created with a modified Kodak 'Fun Saver Panoramic 35' disposable camera reloaded with Kodak Tri-X 35mm film. I process the film in my own darkroom, scan the negatives and print digital archival prints on Hahnemühle Fine Art Pearl paper with an Epson 7890 wide format printer. We [with wife Trish] cut, assemble and paint all our own frame molding, plus we cut the glass and mattes then assemble. In other words we create absolutely everything, down to the very last detail!"
Deon feels his best work is the product of curiosity that led him to experiment with taking black & white landscape photographs with disposable plastic cameras. He said, "It's a low-tech and unassuming technique and its wide format emphasizes the vastness of the American West."
Deon Reynolds' life in photography began at age 7 when his dad helped him make a pinhole camera out of Kodak film boxes and then showed him how to develop the pictures he took in the basement darkroom. Deon has continued taking photographs ever since. He was educated in Portland, Oregon, at the Museum Art School, now the Pacific Northwest College of Art. He apprenticed with several renowned artists and photographers and was a studio assistant and photographer, shooting catalogs for Nordstrom, Nike, and other corporations. He and his wife Trish have lived in Eureka, Nevada, since 2005, in an 1880 bank building, complete with vault, where they’ve operated the Eureka Gallery. They moved to Eureka for the light, the buoyant clarity of the air, and the unpeopled landscapes.
