Welcome to Wednesday, Carson City. The hills have been dusted with a little bit of snow, and we are keeping our fingers crossed for more. Judith Ames has the hosting duties at this week’s Living the Good Life Jazz Jam. Dance it up at the Eleventh Frame Lounge inside Carson Lanes - Jeremy McGuigan serves as guest DJ. The Tahoe Symphony Orchestra and Chorus brings their winter concert, “BRRRoque Masters” to the Shepherd of the Sierra Church at the south end of town; those under 18 are invited to listen without an admission fee.

It’s looking like another rainy day, so there’s a good chance that Muscle Powered will choose to walk at the Multi-purpose Athletic Center rather than their chosen trails, it’s safer that way. You’ll find a power-packed quintet at Comma Coffee delivering a healthy dose of Mile High Jazz. Sierra Nevada Forums bring some truths about our local wildlife populations to this month’s event. TUESDAY, Jan 9: Things to do in Carson City

This Monday might feel a little manic. The Carson and Lyon County kids are back at school (Douglas County starts up again tomorrow.) Rain is expected all day long, so indoor activities are your best bet. Inquiring minds will enjoy the ‘NASA at your Library’ program, just make sure to register online if your kid would like to participate. The High Sierra Swing Dance Club is back on the Eleventh Frame Lounge dance floor after a few weeks of holiday hiatus.

A slow and leisurely Sunday morning yoga practice. This practice will gently warm you up and prepare your body and mind for deeper opening and exploration. The class finishes with a lovely guided meditation.

This practice is based on the Tibetan Yoga chakra balancing series, allowing each student to create a smooth flow of balanced, calm energy. The extra time allows you to deepen into each asana in a way that isn’t available in a shorter class. This deepening relaxes and heals body and mind, reversing the effects of anxiety and chronic stress. (We could all use a little of that!)

I don’t want to jinx anything, but there are rumors of wet stuff on the way. Granted, the valley will probably just see some rain, but I love seeing our mountains snow-capped. The Epic Rides’ Carson City Off-Road race isn’t until June, but locals can sign up tonight at a nice discount. Teens can find a little peace and quiet with the new Meditation Group that meets at A to Zen. Learning to calm your mind can be an invaluable tool during the school year.

Maybe the first step into 2018 is to get grounded, centered, and focused in present time. In present time you are in good a good position to review your past year, evaluate where you are now and create a "picture" for yourself in 2018.

I hope everyone is enjoying these last few days of 2017. While the Carson City Library is getting a much-needed refresh, you'll find limited services at the Adams Hub on Proctor. Get your fill of twinkling holiday lights while you can, the displays at Carson Valley Inn and at Nevada Christmas only run through Friday night.

WEDNESDAY: Dec. 27

On a morning like this, I realize that I need to ask Santa for some windshield wipers. Stay safe out there, Carson City, the roads are wet. The Carson Library is usually a great place to retreat on days like this, but you’ll find their doors closed for the next few weeks: time for a makeover. If you’d like to check out a book or use the wireless internet, you’ll find a ‘pop-up’ library in the Community Center this week, and in the Adams Hub on Proctor Street next week.

It may be Monday, but the next one on the way is Christmas. If you still have some loved ones on your holiday shopping list, the Craft Fair at the Carson Mall is sure to have something for everyone. Monday also means football. Watch the Falcons take on the Buccaneers at Living the Good Life. You’ll find good food, good drinks, and the game on all of their screens. Put some swing in your step at Carson Lanes. The High Sierra Swing Dance Club meets weekly to learn some new dance moves and put them into action. Santa has been spotted at Red’s Old 395: from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

See what our local crafters and artisans have to offer at the Christmas Craft Show inside Carson Mall. It’s karaoke night at Caterpillar’s Hookah Lounge for those over 18. Families with younger ones will be interested in the Polar Express playing on the big screen at the Galaxy Theater.

We are days away from a winter wonderland: halls will be decked, and everything will be merry and bright. On Thursday, Gardnerville will flip the switch on its holiday lights, with help from Santa. Friday, the capital city hosts the Silver and Snowflakes Tree Lighting Celebration, as well as the very yummy Empty Bowls Soup Fest. Saturday, in addition to Carson City’s monthly downtown wine walk and the annual Holiday with a Hero Crawl, Minden holds its annual Christmas Parade.

Let's get this show on the road. The long holiday weekend is behind us, and I hope everyone ate too much. Mondays are a little quiet in our capital city, but that doesn't mean that there is nothing to do. You'll find several changing art exhibits throughout town, so visiting them every few months gives you the chance to experience new art. Monday Night Football is always a fun time to cheer on your team; this week you'll see the Texans and the Ravens battle it out. For family-friendly karaoke, the Fox Brewpub is the place to be.

Ready for the long weekend filled with friends, family, and food? Get in the celebratory spirit with some live jazz at Living the Good Life or country dancing at Carson Lanes. If you’re over 18, you are welcome to check out the karaoke party at Caterpillar’s Hookah Lounge. I don’t know about you, but I can almost smell turkey in the air. Healthy Communities Coalition in Dayton will help you spruce up your holiday dinner during this month’s cooking demo: the pumpkin spice bars caught my eye. The fundraising for the victims of the Nov. 9 rollover accident continues tonight at Chili’s Restaurant. Head there for dinner and a portion of your check will benefit the teens that were injured. Help move your Monday along with something fun. Karaoke at the Fox Brewpub, a Monday Night Football party at Living the Good Life, or Game Night at Carson Cigar Co.

The Capital City Arts Initiative announces its exhibition, "Inside and Outside the Lines", with artwork by artists Jonathan Farber and Susan Kotler at the city’s Sierra Room located in the Carson City Community Center, 851 E William Street, Carson City.

It has been said that those who can’t ‘do,’ teach. ‘Inspirations,’ the newest art exhibit in the Community Development Building by City Hall, proves that adage a lie. At the reception tonight, you’ll get the chance to meet regional art teachers that are still practicing their passion.

I went to a photo shoot yesterday and, when I arrived, my mood was rotten. I felt disconnected. I felt stiff. I started wondering what was up with all the other people around me. Then I recognized the problem. I wasn’t managing my energy or mood. I wasn’t feeling. I was letting the feeling take me. That’s when I decided to use some tools, which I am excited to share with you today.

Don’t let Monday get you manic, find some motivation instead. The Adams Hub on Proctor Street brings you Motivation Monday with lunchtime yoga and community coaching sessions. The Dolphins take on the Panthers in tonight’s big game, pick your team and cheer them on. The Fox Brewpub is a great place to watch the game, and with all-day happy hour in the Fox' Den and karaoke in the Dining Room every Monday, you may as well get there early and stay late.

While you’ll always find a jazz jam at Living the Good Life and karaoke at Caterpillar’s Hookah Lounge on Wednesdays, today offers some special choices. Choose Applebee’s for lunch or dinner and you’ll notice that your server looks suspiciously like a law enforcement officer. The Tip-a-Cop fundraiser benefits the athletes of the Special Olympics. Find some holiday treasures at the Carson City Senior Center. Unique Crafters Holiday Fair in their thrift shop showcases hand-crafted gifts by area seniors. Shoot for the stars at the Elks Hoop Shoot Contest at the Douglas County Community Center.

The weekend has ended, but with Veteran’s Day coming up, the next one will be here in just four short days. Get a jump on your week with Motivation Monday at the Adam’s Hub featuring yoga at lunch and community coaching with Diane Hansen. It’s the Lions versus the Packers for tonight’s game; you’ll find it on just about every screen in town, but the buffet at Living the Good Life makes for a great party. Jump, jive, and wail with the High Sierra Swing Dance Club. Their weekly night out includes lessons for beginners and intermediate steps, then a night of dancing to show off your stuff.

Welcome to November, Carson City. 2017 is plugging right along: summer is behind us and the holiday season is on its way. Take a breath and enjoy this moment of autumn. Get your dose of jazz at Living the Good Life. This week’s jam is led by Tom Stryker’s Impromptu. The Westside Pour House invites you to their first mid-week karaoke night, and ladies will be treated to drink specials. Caterpillar’s Hookah Lounge brings the boys of J and M Productions into the house every Wednesday for an over 18 karaoke party.

What a weekend. Now that Nevada Day is over, we can truly focus on Halloween. Take a trip to the hospital: Carson Tahoe is throwing its annual Spooktacular Stroll, complete with candy, prizes, a bounce house, and more. Head up to Virginia City if you’d like some thrills. The Mackay Mansion is open for its second annual haunted house, even though it’s got a reputation for being haunted year-round. Douglas kids will enjoy a Halloween party at the local Minden Library.

Oh, wow, I just got a glance at the date. With the gorgeous weather planned for today, it’s hard to believe that Christmas is two months away. Let’s celebrate the holidays right in front of us first. The kids aren’t going to want to miss out on the Carson City Boo-nanza: trick or treating at the Community Center, crafts and activities at the Library, and Hotel Transylvania on the screen at the Aquatic Center. DJ Trivia is looking to expand their team of Trivia-masters: head to Red’s Old 395 tonight if you’d like to audition, or just play.

We have arrived at my favorite week of the year. I am a great lover of all things Nevada Day, and it’s practically moments away. Luckily, we have plenty to keep us busy until Saturday. Two new art exhibits have appeared over the weekend: the annual Nevada Day Show at the Nevada Artists Association gallery, and ‘Inspirations’ at the Community Development Building, across from City Hall on Proctor.

Nevada Day is just around the corner, but don’t jump the gun. This weekend offers fun for the young and young-at-heart. If you’ve got more apples than you know what to do with, the Greenhouse Garden Center has a cider press available today. Play BINGO for a good cause at the Carson City Senior Center, and don’t forget your costume. Carson City Symphony Association begins their 34th Season today with a concert at the Bob Boldrick Theater; as always, those under 18 get free admission.

SUNDAY:
