UNR grad schools, programs ranked among the nation’s best

The University of Nevada, Reno had several notable rankings in the annual listing of the nation’s best graduate schools and programs released in March by U.S. News and World Report. Overall, the University achieved an all-time-high with four graduate school and 24 graduate program rankings.

English professor releases new book of poems, “Of Dirt and Tar”

Readers will discover “deftly-crafted narrative moments that unreel like snippets of cinema” in the poems of June Sylvester Saraceno's new book, entitled “Of Dirt and Tar.”

The second, full-length collection of poetry by Saraceno, the English department chair at Sierra Nevada College, will be released March 1 by Cherry Grove Collections, with accolades on its jacket by some of the nation's top poets.

2013 Nevada Reads: 'girlchild' by Tupelo Hassman

Nevada Center for the Book and the Carson City Library will present author Tupelo Hassman on Thursday, Nov. 14 at 11 a.m. Hassman’s first novel, "girlchild," is written in a compelling style of short chapters, redacted pages, and gut-wrenching narrative. The Nevada Reads event is sponsored by the Nevada Center for the Book and Nevada Humanities.

Nevada Humanities Scholar Dr. Reginald Stewart will participate in this book discussion, as well. A focus of discussion will be on the eugenics of generational poverty.

Regional authors, instructors featured at Ventana Sierra conference in Carson City

The Sierra region’s own literary stars will be shining at the Ventana Sierra Advanced Writing Workshop Friday-Sunday, June 14-16, at Western Nevada College in Carson City.

New York Times bestselling author Ellen Hopkins is the keynote speaker and the architect of the event, designed to help writers of all genres and skill levels to be successful. All proceeds benefit Ventana Sierra Youth Housing and Resource Initiative, a 501(c) (3) nonprofit foundation created by Hopkins to provide housing and resources to local youth.

'Always Lost: A Meditation on War' exhibit honored at Nevada Legislature

“Always Lost: A Meditation on War” has returned home to Carson City and was given full honors Wednesday at the Nevada Legislature.

Western Nevada College’s acclaimed creative writing/photographic exhibition about the costs of war will be on display in the Nevada Legislative Building’s second-floor atrium weekdays through May 3.

Tony Mariskanish, with the Nevada Legislature, installs the "Always Lost: A Meditation on War" art and humanities exhibition at the Legislative Building on Friday. An opening ceremony will be held Wednesday, April 17, at 1 p.m. in the second floor atrium. The ceremony is free and open to the public and the exhibit will be open at the Legislature until May 3.

Carson City Symphony to present 'A Celebration in Two Sharps' featuring acclaimed cellist

The Carson City Symphony, conducted by David Bugli, will perform "A Celebration in Two Sharps" on Sunday, April 28, 4 p.m., at the Carson City Community Center's Bob Boldrick Theater, 851 E. William Street. Guest soloist Stephen Framil will play the Cello Concerto by Antonín Dvořák.

The program also features Wagner's Overture to "Rienzi" and Schubert's "Unfinished" Symphony. All three compositions are associated with keys having two sharps, D major and B minor.

The Private Bank by Nevada State Bank releases research on charitable giving by wealthiest Nevadans

LAS VEGAS – Nevadans with a net worth of more than $1 million make up only 0.2 percent of the state’s population but account for more than 27 percent of its reported charitable contributions, according to a report from The Private Bank by Nevada State Bank.

The third in the bank’s series of monthly reports prepared in conjunction with local market research firm Applied Analysis focused on charitable giving by Nevadans with a household net worth of at least $1 million.

The Carson City Symphony, directed by David Bugli, will open its 29th season on Sunday, 4 p.m., with a concert, "Scandinavia and All That Jazz," at the Carson City Community Center's Bob Boldrick Theater, 851 E. William Street in Carson City.

After the first half of the concert, harmonica player Tom Stryker will lead a harmonica workshop for youth attending the concert. Each will be given a harmonica and learn to play a tune. After intermission, they will perform on stage.
