Carson City Symphony presents 'Scandinavia and All That Jazz' with Carl Petersson
The Carson City Symphony, directed by David Bugli, will open its twenty-ninth season on Sunday, October 21, 2012, 4:00 p.m., with a concert, "Scandinavia & All That Jazz," at the Carson City Community Center's Bob Boldrick Theater, 851 E. William Street in Carson City. Featured guest soloist is Swedish pianist Carl Petersson.
Tickets are $15 general admission; $12 for seniors, students, and Symphony Association members; and free for youth age 16 and under. The concert presents works by Scandinavian composers, including the Piano Concerto by Edvard Grieg, Symphonic Dances on Norwegian Themes by Grieg, and Swedish Rhapsody No. 1 by Hugo Alfvén.
Also on the program is "It's About Time: Styles for Jazz Combo & Orchestra" by David Bugli. It covers the evolution of jazz and pop music styles of the 20th century, Dixieland, bebop, ballad, jazz waltz, bossa nova, samba, and rock. The five-piece combo is Tom Stryker, harmonica; Dan Lancaster, saxophones and flute; John Shipley, piano; George Worth, bass; and Lee Warner, drums.
The concert includes pre-show entertainment by the STRAZZ youth strings in the lobby beginning at 3:00 p.m. They will play Scandinavian dance tunes from Norway, Denmark, and Finland.
The audience is also invited to a free concert preview in the Sierra Room at 3:15 p.m. and a dinner reception after the concert. The preview, hosted by Conductor David Bugli, will include discussions with soloist Carl Petersson. The post-concert reception is at Garibaldi's Ristorante Italiano, 703 N. Carl Petersson, a native of Sweden, is a graduate of the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen, where he studied piano performance and pedagogy. He is completing his Ph.D. in piano performance at the Music Academy in Cracow, Poland. Mr. Petersson has performed in Sweden, Denmark, Poland, France, the Czech Republic, Germany, Israel, and Canada; won several awards; and recorded two CDs. In addition to performing, Mr. Petersson enjoys teaching students at all levels. He has taught at the Royal Danish Academy of Music, in Swedish universities, and worked with students in the Czech Republic, Great Britain, France, the Netherlands, and Slovenia.
This performance is part of World Music Days, an annual global event affirming the ideals of tolerance, friendship, and shared humanity, inspired by the life and work of journalist and musician Daniel Pearl.
Carson City Symphony is a community orchestra of about 60 players who perform music from the 15th to 21st centuries. The 2012-13 concert season is funded, in part, by a grant from the Nevada Arts Council, a state agency, and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.
