What’s this? A weekend with no snow in sight? That’s the best news I’ve heard in months. Welcome to the wrestlers and swimmers who are in town for their respective tournaments: you’ll find other fun things on this list to occupy your downtime. It’s a St. Patty’s celebration in Virginia City this weekend with the parade, Rocky Mountain Oyster Fest, and Ball Buster Saloon Crawl. Bragging rights are on the line at the Sixth Annual Thirsty Boy Homebrew Competition sponsored by Just Brew It. You’ll get a sneak peek at the soon-to-open Shoe Tree Brewery if you attend the award ceremony.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed for clear skies, but there are rumors of snow flurries. Luckily there are indoor and outdoor activities, no matter what blows our way. At the top of the list for today is Winter, Wine, Spirits, and All That Jazz at the Brewery Arts Center. Their annual fundraiser is not to be missed.

Indoor go-cart track in Carson City has green light going forward

Construction has begun on a 750 foot indoor go-cart track planned at 3777 North Carson Street in Carson City, chief architect Ken Rose said Friday.

Carson High School students are currently working with great intensity to fulfill their Senior Projects, a graduation requirement.

RENO, Nev. – Reno-Tahoe International Airport proudly begins non-stop service to San Jose, Ca., the heart of the Silicon Valley on the “LUV” airline, Southwest. Starting June 4, 2017, Southwest Airlines will offer daily, non-stop service to Mineta San Jose International Airport, adding to the summer travel options between Reno and the Bay.

I believe I felt a collective sigh of relief when 2016 left and 2017 made its grand entrance. The new year is filled with so much hope, promise, and delight. Yet, I was disappointed when I opened Facebook the other day and one person stated that 2017 is already proving to be just like 2016 for them.

Senator Square: Students beat teachers in Carson High School dodgeball tournament


The annual Carson High School Dodgeball Tournament took place Dec. 6-16 in the Carson High School big gym during lunch, and both the victory and bragging rights went to the students and not to the teachers.

The competition was fierce with rubber balls flying all over the place and many of the younger CHS teachers strutting their stuff out on the gym floor, battling feverishly to defeat the students.

I’m usually a lover of sunny days, but right now I say bring on the rain. The moisture is a welcome help to our heroic firefighters in Lake Tahoe and Washoe Valley. Because of the wet weather and the recent fires, some activities have been postponed: most notably the Advocates to End Domestic Violence’s Annual Light After Dark Run. There are still plenty of things to occupy your time, but the weather may force more cancellations.

Firefighters get upper hand on wildfire in south Carson City, wind remains top concern

UPDATE 8:38AM FRIDAY: The Clear Creek fire is 100 percent contained as of Friday morning. Fire crews are keeping an eye on hotspots and embers and were busy overnight with spot fires, said Carson City Fire Department Spokeswoman Stacey Belt.

UPDATE 9:10PM: Approximately 65 homes have been evacuated because of the fire in the Clear Creek area in southeast Carson City. The cause of the fire, reported at 5:38 p.m., is under investigation. Carson City Fire Department spokeswoman Stacey Belt said all the large flames have been knocked down, however there are embers and hot spots. There is zero percent containment as of 9 p.m. There will be crews monitoring the fire throughout the night. Evacuees will not be allowed into their homes before midnight, said Belt.

UPDATE 8:57PM: The Carson City Sheriff's Office has turned over its police operations to Washoe Tribe Police Department because the fire is on tribal land, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong. Carson City Fire Department and other outside agencies continue to monitor the fire, striking down blowing embers and attempting to get a perimeter. The Salvation Army is at Fuji Park providing assistance for the evacuees, said CCFD spokeswoman Stacey Belt.

UPDATE 8:32PM: Clear Creek Fire update From Stacey Belt, public information officer for Carson City Fire Department: As of 8 p.m. there have been no structures lost, no injuries reported, mutual aid is responding from throughout the region. Public Works is responding in the neighborhoods, looking for spot fires.
"We are fighting high winds. Embers are flying. We are expecting the winds to pick up in the next hour. So our goal is to get around this as soon as possible to save this community," she said.

UPDATE 7:58PM: Power is out in the Topsy Lane area, NV Energy work crews are working to restore power. Traffic lights are out in the area. Winds continue to move the fire. No containment at this time. There haven't been reports at this time of structures burned.

Inspiration can come from anywhere. Sometimes, business lessons come flying at me faster than I can take notes about them. Ideas are sort of like orbs. Some you can’t see unless you are looking for them. Some people believe in them, some don’t. Yet they are always a topic of discussion.
