Standard Deviations: The Digital Art of Michael Holcomb Opens In Reno

Event Date:
May 18, 2012 (All day)

Standard Deviation: The Digital Art of Michael HolcombOK…Let’s say sometime in the 19th century, George Boole, who created the algebra that’s the basis for digital logic and computer science, met the German biological illustrator Ernst Haeckel and they decided to make art. It might have looked very much like the work of Michael Holcomb, an artist whose images are on view at the McKinley Arts & Culture Center Gallery West, May 14th through June 22nd.

Column: Has City Center been judiciously considered?

A vocal minority’s intermittent cheerleading promotes the massive City Center project. Their objective: replace the city library with a +$75 million, three-times-the-size library complex just east of the Nugget Casino. (The ‘official’ $49 million cost curiously excludes 30 years of interest payments.)

Absent from this well-intentioned, but ill-conceived project are viability, necessity and prudence.

Carson City Museums — Keep on Thinking, Learning

When we were young it was always the field trip that got us out of the classroom to see for ourselves what our teachers wanted us to learn. The museum is always a place of wonder; a time machine that transports you to places where there were no smart phones or computers, let alone electricity and flushing toilets. Carson City has some great museums filled with enough old time artifacts, pictures and interactive learning centers to intrigue parents and their children.

Movie Review: 'Underworld Awakening' a waste of Beckinsale's talent

The sci-fi-horror film "Underworld Awakened" screening at the Fandango Galaxy cineplex in Carson City is the fourth iteration of the series, in this case starring Kate Beckinsale as Selene for the third time.

Selene hs been in suspended animation in a freezer for 12 years bust breaks out to find that humankind is at war with the vampires in the population a well as the werewolves.

Well, she isn't going to sit still for this and with super athleticism leaps off buildings and bumps of a bunch of cop-soldiers (hard to tell them apart but they all have machine guns).

NPRI has political motive, but is right on the law

On its face, the Nevada Policy Research Institute lawsuit against state Sen. Mo Denis and the state is ludicrous.

The notion that somehow Denis' duties repairing computers for the Public Utilities Commission somehow conflicts with his legislative duties is far-fetched. He has no power in the executive branch with that — let me think of a word — ministerial job, so why sue him over it?

A small tribute to Steve Jobs

There are many people who remember where they were and what they were doing when they found out that John Lennon had died. Others remember the death of JFK with similar sadness, the memory sharp and untouched after nearly 50 years.

Remembering Steve Jobs

Steve Jobs, the visionary who created products from the Macintosh computer to the iPhone, died today. Without his genius, I'm not sure you would be reading this website today. I've used Apple computers for the last 25 years. I'm writing this on an Apple MacBook Pro, after hearing the news from an alert on my iPhone. The following is a video of his commencement address at Stanford University in 2005:

Movie Review: Brad Pitt may not hit a homer in 'Moneyball,' but at least it is a triple

The baseball-computer film "Moneyball" now playing at the Fandango Galaxy multiplex in Carson City, is the story of how computer analysis came to baseball through the then lowly Oakland A's. Brad Pitt is Billy Beane, general manager of the A's and a one-time hot prospect for baseball fame but who stuck out.

UNR student calls out lawmakers Tweeting, typing and texting during testimony

By Andrew Doughman / Nevada News Bureau
RENO – Behind the laptop, beside the cell phone and next to the iPad tablet, somewhere, is a legislator.
“I ask you to please stop looking at your phones,” said Crystal Jackson, a UNR student. “Stop looking as if you’re bored.”
She made the remarks after legislators were more than two hours into listening to students and faculty testify about proposed higher-education cuts at the University of Nevada, Reno on Thursday.

Commenting Obstacles

While I fully respect Kirk's decision to link comment posting to facebook, and also understand the reason he gives, I don't think it is the right step.

I've never heard about the major site "Techcrunch" which he mentions as having successfully implemented this, but I am sure everybody has heard about the major sites Los Angeles Times and CNN that implemented it as well and have since gone back to offering the traditional method of sign-up. Simply because too many participants refused to open a facebook account just to be able to comment; they simply don't trust this social network.

State worker launches budget deficit plan, issues challenge to economists

Carl Kuhl, a state Parole and Probation employee of six years, has created a plan that he claims will eliminate Nevada's budget deficit within two years.

In a news release issued on Tuesday, Kuhl said his plan not only will reduce the budget deficit but also help repair Nevada's economy at the same time. It is a pretty big claim, he admits, coming from an Accounting Assistant I, an entry level position.

Carson City Greenhouse Project breaks ground

A year-round supply of fresh leafy greens and other nutritious foods has been the wish of Penny Reynolds, culinary arts director for Carson High School. And now those hopes will soon come to be as The Greenhouse Project, a community-based greenhouse and garden, takes root in Carson City.

A ground-breaking ceremony held on Friday marks the beginning of a project that many believe will be a model for Carson City, the state of Nevada and the nation. Construction will begin next week.

Burning Man: No police state in Black Rock City

BLACK ROCK CITY, Nev. — Forget all those rumors about this year's Burning Man event being a police state.

It's the same gathering of free-wheeling Burners that have populated the Black Rock Desert near Gerlach for more than 10 years, with the Bureau of Land Management, Pershing and Washoe counties' sheriffs deputies helping keep the 48,195 Burners reasonably in line. Final attendance is expected to hit 50,000.
