Costco first retailer to embrace 'CarsonProud' campaign

Costco is the first major retailer to embrace Carson City’s #CarsonProud campaign and is looking forward to assisting Mayor Robert Crowell and other Supervisors in getting the word out about all the positive changes to take place in the near future in the downtown core.

Carson City man in custody on burglary charges related to church break-in
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Thu, 03/12/2015 - 6:25pmThe Carson City Sheriff’s Office executed two search warrants Thursday and have arrested a Carson City man on felony charges related to the February burglary of local church, a Carson City sheriff’s lieutenant said.
Arrested was Dwayne Kirk Snyder, 36. He faces felony charges of commercial burglary and possession of stolen property in the Feb. 3, 2015 break-in of Capital Baptist Church located at 455 South Edmonds Drive.
Senator Square: Proficiency testing this week at Carson High School

Students taking the proficiency tests will begin their school day at the regular time of 7:45 a.m., while those not taking the proficiencies will start their school day at 10:30 a.m. The following tests will be given on the assigned days — March 2: Math; March 3: Reading; March 4: Writing; and March 5: Science. Douglas County authorities: Burglars have been targeting Carson Valley homes

The incidents have occurred primarily during daytime hours, said DCSO Sgt. Pat Brooks.

Several of them have been along the main corridors of the west side of Carson City on West Winnie Lane and Washington streets. They are occurring during the day time while the residents are away from the home.
USDA grant funds available for rural broadband

The program provides grants to establish essential broadband services in rural communities where it is currently not available.
“Many rural communities in Nevada do not have access to broadband,” said Adler. “USDA’s Community Connect Grant Program ensures that rural residents have the ability to run businesses, get the most from their education, and benefit from the infinite services that fast, reliable broadband provides.”

UNR seeks donors for Lake Tahoe fire camera system
Submitted by editor on Mon, 12/08/2014 - 11:15amThe success of the pilot program for fire cameras at Lake Tahoe has prompted the University of Nevada, Reno’s Nevada Seismological Laboratory to pursue funding to build out its fire camera network that rings the majestic mile-high lake.
“We’ve seen the system avert potentially large fires this summer at Tahoe, even with its minimal presence,” Graham Kent, director of the Nevada Seismological Laboratory, said of the prototype system with its four cameras. “It makes sense to build this system out now to help protect the basin from devastating fires.”
Holidays are open season for thieves, sheriff's office advises taking preventative measures

While many of us will be shopping for the best deal on Christmas presents criminals are planning ways of how to take advantage of us while we are distracted. Many of the tips provided involve common sense and can be practiced year round.
We are a very generous community and can fall victim to several scams that are ongoing, not just in Carson City but across the nation.
Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber announces 2014 Blue Ribbon Award winners

Produced by the Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce, also known as TahoeChamber, this prestigious awards program solicited nominations for six categories and eight total awards.
Over 175 nominations were received and 95 of those nominated joined their peers at the Nov. 13 awards ceremony at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe.

Carson High School Makes Engineering Addition To School

Young students learn computer programming and 3D design at UNR summer camp

And, their parents were happy. The students weren’t playing games; they were designing and building things like a whistle, buildings, hot air balloon, cars, DNA models, bracelets, airplanes and more, using a 3-D modeling and CAD design program.
Two men sought for stealing computers from Gardnerville Walmart
Submitted by editor on Thu, 07/10/2014 - 1:56pmDouglas County authorities are asking for the public's help in identifying two men sought in connection with the May 4 early morning theft of two computers from a Walmart store in Gardnerville.
According to Douglas County Sheriff's Sgt. Pat Brooks, two men entered the store at 1511 Grant Avenue at 3:41 a.m., took two computers from the electronics section, exited the store and drove away in a white Chevrolet Impala or vehicle similar to it.
The sheriff's office provided two photos of the suspects from store surveillance.
Carson City schools see improvement in students using new laptops

Back in February Carson City schools handed out laptops to middle schoolers as part of a donation program to improve learning. A few months later we tracked the progress of the program to see how much the computers helped those students in the classroom.
Carson City high school students win big at National History Day regional competition

Of the 15 entries from Nicole Fagundes’ Honors World History class, 12 received honors, including six first place entries that advance to the national competition at the University of Maryland at College Park in June.

Trio face felony burglary, larceny charges in theft of computers from Walmart
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Tue, 02/11/2014 - 2:28pmThree Carson City Jail inmates were booked Monday on felony charges of burglary and grand larceny following an investigation into the theft of three computers stolen from Walmart on Jan. 21, 2014.
The men arrested are Joseph Larson, 24 of Dayton, Michael Harrell and John Kramer, both 20. Each face bail amounts of $30,000.

One of the things I am thankful for is that we have finished updating all our office computers operating system to a newer version of “doors” (not the real name to protect the innocent). I haven’t noticed any improvement in productivity yet though. (I thought new computer stuff always meant new tools that make us more productive.
