The Foundation for Carson City Parks and Recreation is holding an Open House at the Wungnema House in Mills Park during Nevada Day Weekend on Sunday, Oct. 30, 2016, from 2 to 5 p.m.

The building is accessible by the Park entrance on Saliman Road, opposite the high school. Admission to the open house is free. This will be an opportunity to learn about this historic building, about Indian history and culture, and about the Foundation. Open Houses are also planned for Sunday, Nov. 27, and Sunday, Dec. 18, also from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.

As October marches along we find ourselves nearing election day. Head to the first floor of the courthouse to earn your 'I Voted' sticker now; early voting continues until Nov. 4. Another way to make your voice heard today is by attending the Arts Town Hall sponsored by the Nevada Arts Association. They are looking for the ways that arts and culture can be improved in the Carson City area, among other things. While the mornings can be chilly, a walk with Muscle Powered along the Freeway Multi-use Path will get your blood pumping.

It’s that time of year again. The ghosts and ghouls come out of hiding and paint the town orange. Halloween isn’t just one night around here. Combined with the festivities of Nevada Day, you can be sure to enjoy at least a week’s worth of celebrating.

Recognized as one of a handful of the most haunted towns in the U.S., Virginia City rattles the chains, cages, ballroom floor and railroad tracks for the rest of the month as part of its “Hauntober” celebration, offering up ghostly adventures culminating Oct. 31, Nevada Day and Halloween.

I’m usually a lover of sunny days, but right now I say bring on the rain. The moisture is a welcome help to our heroic firefighters in Lake Tahoe and Washoe Valley. Because of the wet weather and the recent fires, some activities have been postponed: most notably the Advocates to End Domestic Violence’s Annual Light After Dark Run. There are still plenty of things to occupy your time, but the weather may force more cancellations.

Sundays are a great time for relaxing, but you’ve got some options around town just the same. Head out with Muscle Powered for their weekly bike ride. The weekend is here and you’ll find plenty to do in Carson City and the surrounding valleys. Run from zombies in Virginia City as the REDRUN obstacle race returns. Find the perfect pumpkin at the annual Seeliger Elementary Pumpkin Patch. The long-awaited Animal Shelter has been built and is now home to adoptable pets waiting for a home: take a tour at their open house after the 10 a.m. ribbon cutting. Street Vibes and the Candy Dance are always the endcap to September. Arts and crafts take over the small hamlet of Genoa this weekend; get a jump on your holiday gift list. All the other corners of Northern Nevada are a playground for the thousands of motorcycle riders and enthusiasts here to enjoy the bike rally. Battle Born Harley on Research Way offers a huge party without ever leaving the valley. Those two events are hardly all that Carson City and our neighboring counties have to offer, however. The sight of a pair of outhouses barreling down the street with thousands cheering them on in an all-out, old school potty race would probably be considered an odd form of entertainment almost anywhere, but not in Virginia City.

This annual fall tradition on the Comstock, the World Championship Outhouse Races, takes place the first weekend of October and pits teams of three costumed outhouse racers against each other, sprinting down the town’s historic main street, C Street, toward the toilet paper finish line.

Virginia City celebrates the next two weekends with historic proportions including the Great Civil War Days this Saturday through Monday, the annual Labor Day parade and then prepares itself with giddy and up go the following weekend with the 57th annual International Camel and Ostrich Races.

More United States military veterans will be able to travel to Washington, D.C. because of the proceeds expected from this weekend's regional chili cook-offs held at Glen Eagles Restaurant in north Carson City, Honor Flight Nevada Founder Jon Yuspa said.

Those men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for the United States were honored Monday in ceremonies across the country and locally at the Historic Dayton Cemetery in Dayton, the Historic Stewart Indian School Cemetery and Lone Mountain Cemetery in Carson City.

Today we remember those who have fallen while defending our country. The Historic Stewart Cemetery on Snyder will feature a ceremony at 10 a.m. Lone Mountain Cemetery hosts a ceremony at 1 p.m. and the public is invited to help remove the several hundred flags that were placed on the graves of veterans at 4 p.m. Dayton Cemetery holds their service at 9 a.m. Enjoy a free bar-be-que at Evergreen Gene’s. MONDAY: Memorial Day

Edward Arthur King, died May 24, 2016, at Carson Tahoe Medical Center from the effects of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. He was born Dec. 4, 1937, in Los Angeles to Marcus J. and Josephine H. King.

He served in the US Navy, and later worked handling bills of lading and routing for Lee Way Motor Freight in Downey, CA.

He married the former Alyce Devorraux McDonald on Dec. 4, 1975.

In 1985 the couple moved to Carson City, where he was employed as inventory manager for American Building Company. He retired from there in 2006.

Midnight Madness has descended upon the valley, bringing with it a 72 hour softball tournament at Centennial Park. Veterans organizations and volunteers from the Carson City area placed nearly 1,400 U.S. flags over memorial grave markers Friday afternoon at Lone Mountain Cemetery.

Vietnam veterans groups, Fleet Reserve Association of Sierra Tahoe, the Disabled Veterans of America were joined by NJROTC, Boy Scouts, Girls Scouts and Elks Lodge. In nearly 30 minutes, all the flags for the ceremony had been distributed and were placed over the markers.

Help honor those who have served our country with a flag placing at the Lone Mountain Cemetery, or at one of the several Memorial Day ceremonies around the area. Here's what's happening this Memorial Day weekend around Carson City.

A few days left of school, a few days left of May: summer is knocking on the door and insisting to be let in. If only it would bring some sunshine with it, we’d be set. Get the weekend started with a good time downtown: Stereo Galaxy at Westside Pour House, comedy at the Nugget, and a DJ at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar. Party 80s style at Whiskey Tavern’s karaoke party. Minden kicks off a summer of Concerts in the Park tonight with a tribute to the Beatles.

Be ready for anything with this sneak peak of this weekend’s activities. Help honor those who have served our country with a flag placing at the Lone Mountain Cemetery, or at one of the several Memorial Ceremonies around the area.

Admission to the open house is free. This will be an opportunity to learn about this historic building and about the Foundation.

The Disabled American Veterans and other local veterans organizations from the Carson City area will place 1,200 U.S. flags on veterans graves at Lone Mountain Cemetery in Carson City on Friday, May 27 beginning at 4 p.m.

Other groups will be assisting, including some members of the NJROTC, Boy Scouts, Girls Scouts and Elks Lodge. Volunteers are welcome to help place flags and youth groups are encouraged and welcomed to participate.

It’s a big day for the stage in Carson City. Under the lights of the Performance Hall at the Brewery Art Center, the four primary candidates for Carson City Mayor and for State Assembly District 40 will participate in a forum hosted by the Chamber of Commerce. Get to know the people you will see on the June Ballot. At the Bob Boldrick Theater, the Carson High Musical Theater Ensemble will perform for their last time this school year. If you’d like to overcome your inhibitions about public speaking or just improve your skills: the Toastmasters may be the group for you.
