The Carson City Sheriff’s Office Motor Unit, which adopted the feline shelter Catmandu as the nonprofit organization it would help through the sale of t-shirts at last month's Extreme Motor Officer Training Challenge, presented a $500 check Wednesday to the organization.

“We’re really grateful for all you’ve done for us,” said Linda Buchanan, founder of the nonprofit Catmandu, which has been struggling financially this year to keep its doors open.

The 13th annual Extreme Motor Officer Training Challenge, hosted by the Carson City Sheriff's Office, wrapped up training exercises Saturday afternoon at Mills Park, a space shared concurrently with the Rockabilly Riot hot-rod car show event.

Motor officers from around the country return to Carson City this week to train and compete in the 13th annual Extreme Motor Officer Training Challenge at Mills Park.

The event runs Thursday through Saturday at Mills Park with Thursday a practice day for the competitors. The big events that bring the most spectators and participants will be on Friday and Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and feature music, vendors, food, demonstrations and contests.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office Motor Unit has adopted Catmandu as this year’s 13th Annual Extreme Motor Officer Training Challenge (Black Cat 13) charity. The Motor Unit will be raising funds through t-shirt sales and donations at the event scheduled for June 24-25 at Mills Park.

Thanks to those who came forward and helped, the “CLOSED” sign has been taken down and Catmandu will re-open in a limited capacity starting on Friday, June 3.

Catmandu has closed the gates and is not taking in any more cats or kittens at this time. Unless Carson City and the surrounding communities open their wallets and start providing support, the facility will likely not re-open.

Catmandu will have fabulous items for the special Mom in your life at our Craft Fair booth at Carson Mall on May 5, 6, and 7. Handmade pottery, gift baskets, wine baskets, new jewelry, and many other wonderful items will be available. With the kitten season in full swing this is an important fundraiser to pay for vaccinations, spay/neuter, vet checks, as well as food and shelter for these sweet little kitties. We have wonderful adult cats available for adoption too! Please support Catmandu and give your mom something special at the same time!

The fifth annual Nevada's Big Give charity drive will be held statewide on Thursday, March 10.

The Big Give is an online donation drive designed to raise as much money as possible in a 24-hour period for various statewide and local charities.

Kitten season is just around the corner and Catmandu needs your help, both physically and financially.

Catmandu cat rescue, adoption center and sanctuary will be closed to the public from Monday, February 29th through Tuesday, March 15th for our annual Spring Break and deep cleaning projects. We re-open on Wednesday, March 16th and will resume our normal hours of operation which are: Wednesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Catmandu will have an exciting booth at the Valentine's Day Craft Fair on Friday, Saturday and Sunday; February 5, 6, and 7; and February 12, 13, and 14.

We will also have great Valentine gifts for sale! Kitties for adoption may be there as available.

Catmandu needs volunteers. Can you help us help homeless and abandoned cats and kittens in our community? We take in cats that would otherwise live and die on the streets. We care for them, help them become healthy, and get them spayed/neutered to prevent the vicious cycle of homeless cats. Then, best of all we help them find their very own forever family and home. While plowing his field on Wednesday, a local farmer came upon the body of a feral mother cat who had been literally ripped to pieces by predators. After burying the remains, he climbed back on his tractor to resume plowing. A small movement by the wheel caught his eye. Looking down, he saw two tiny kittens lying in the dirt. They were cold, hungry and frightened.

We are celebrating Okto-purrr-fest with a kitten adoption special! We have over 40 adorable kittens anxiously awaiting a forever home.

Catmandu will be closed to the public October 5-13, reopening October 14th. This is our bi-annual closure for deep cleaning, reorganizing and winterizing. We will be working on these special projects 10/8, 10/9 and 10/10 from 11-4. Please come by and lend a hand if you can. Every helping hand makes a difference!

A GoFundMe account has been set up to help Catmandu in Carson City recover veterinary costs for a badly injured cat, medical costs for the many kittens brought in during this kitten season, and much needed facility maintenance and repair. Kitten season has arrived with a vengeance at Catmandu. We have several different litters of kittens that need a safe and loving place to go for a few weeks. While a few require minor medical care (cleaning goopy eyes and applying eye ointment; occasional diarrhea), most just need a place to stay until they are old enough to adopt. A bedroom, large bathroom, or similar-sized room is ideal.

Vicky of Carson City took out her trash last Saturday night and returned with a box of dirty, cold, scared, and hungry kittens. Alerted by tiny meows of distress, she found four tiny kitties stuffed inside an old box next to her apartment dumpster. Although she had never owned a cat, she has a kind heart. So Vicky took them home, fed and cared for them as best as she could, then contacted Catmandu.

Happy Mother’s Day, Carson City! Several family friendly events are occurring around town this weekend. Take a ride on the McKeen Motor Car at the Nevada State Railroad Museum or the Ferris Wheel at RSVP’s Spring Fair and Carnival. A Harmonica and Strings Concert at Empire Elementary School showcases what some of our talented students can do. Get up early and head over to the Carson City Airport if your youngster has any interest in planes: Young Eagles flights are happening today if the weather permits.

Kitten season is getting into full swing! Kittens in need of help are arriving at Catmandu DAILY. With new kittens comes the need for more volunteers. We need foster homes desperately, both now and throughout the summer. Some of the arrivals are mamas with babies, others are orphans. Some will need to be bottle fed. Others are eating solid food, but need the one-on-one attention and loving touch that only a foster home can provide.

Learn the rich and fascinating history of Carson City’s Eastside during a two-hour walking tour. Led by Eileen Cohen, local author and historian, the tour will visit sites such as Chinatown, the race course, and many others.

Meet on the steps of the Capitol at 9:30 a.m. Wear comfy shoes. A lag car will be provided.

Tickets - $10 in Advance; $15 the day of the tour. Children 12 and under are free.
