Pioneer High School Named Nevada State Finalist in Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Contest

John Corbitt, a Pioneer High School teacher, and his math students applied for a grant with Samsung during the first semester of this school year. The school was recently notified that their application was one of the five school finalists in the State of Nevada.

Funded by a $1.2 million naming gift from the William N. Pennington Foundation of Reno and donations from the Carson City community, the club broke ground on the Teen Center in October 2015.

Cross-country cyclists make Boys and Girls Club stop ahead of Friday night WNC celebration

Members of the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity rolled into Carson City Friday as part of a cross-country bicycling tour — Journey of Hope — to support people with disabilities. The bikers made a quick stop at the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada on Friday and have now pedaled their way to Western Nevada College for an evening filled with events and entertainment.

CHS senior project addresses childhood hunger with Friday bake sale fundraiser

Carson High School student Larrissa Cruzan has put her love of baking to a good cause as part of her senior project.

She's organized a bake sale this Friday at the Boys and Girls Clubs in Carson City. The purpose of the senior project and bake sale is to spread awareness and raise money for the nonprofit organization Feeding America and its efforts to end childhood hunger and address childhood nutrition in the U.S.

Electrical issue forces Monday holiday closure of Boys and Girls Club in Carson City

The Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada facility at 1870 Russell Way in Carson City will be closed Monday, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, due to an electrical issue.

According to Diane McCoy, director of operations, there is an overall issue with the power that may not be resolved until Monday afternoon at the latest. The Boys and Girls Club was anticipating around 200 or more children tomorrow for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.
