Carson City Pop Warner football and cheer season signups begin Friday

Carson City Pop Warner Youth Cheerleading will hold sign-up events Friday, Sunday and again on June 14 for the upcoming 2013 youth football and cheer season. The cheerleading program is open to girls ages 5-15 years.

The first sign-up event will be held Friday, May 17 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada, 1870 Russell Way in Carson City.

A second sign-up will take place at the same location during the Boys and Girls Club Open House on Sunday, May 19 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Carson City Chamber poses questions in survey for residents

As part of its Dialogue 2013 series, the Chamber is reaching out to locals who live, work, play, and learn in Carson City via SurveyMonkey.

After meeting with the Leadership Institute Class of 2013, students at WNC, Chamber members, teenagers at the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada and the senior at the Senior Center, the Chamber is expanding its reach to allow residents to respond to two simple questions: Why do we live here and what do we see that our city will be like by the year 2020.

Rotary Club of Carson City Announces Winners of Second Annual Beer and Pizza Championships

CARSON CITY, NV - For the second year in a row, area residents came out by the hundreds to enjoy an evening of pizza, beer, music and fundraising for a good cause. The second annual Carson City Rotary Club Beer and Pizza Championships was a big success, raising more than $25,000 to assist with a number of community needs.

Arbor Day 2013 in Carson City will be on April 26, beginning at 5:30 p.m. at Fulstone Park. This year's event will recognize Gardeners Reclaiming Our Waysides (or GROW for short) with its landscaping efforts along the Carson City freeway.

In November 2012 GROW was recognized as Carson City's "Organization of the Year" at the city's Parks and Recreation annual awards ceremony held in partnership with the Foundation for the Betterment of Carson City and the Carson City Historical Society.

Shoe Drive to Benefit The Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada

This fall, the Lodge Assisted Living Community is sponsoring SOLEmates, a month long program to help provide new athletic shoes to kids with The Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada. The number of children who need help in Carson City is disproportionately high when compared to other communities of its size. Too many kids don’t have life’s basic necessities; some even tape their shoes to keep them together. The goal of SOLEmates is to acquire 300 pairs of new athletic shoes to help those kids run, play and stay active.

Open House at Carson City AAA on Friday to benefit Special Olympics

In the spirit of teamwork and goodwill, AAA continues its steadfast tradition to civic involvement by hosting on May 18 an open house designed to benefit Special Olympics in its south Carson City office.

The event, which is slated from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., includes a silent auction, special insurance counseling, travel advice as well as ample refreshments. Proceeds from the silent auction with items ranging from a glider plane ride to a round of golf will be earmarked for the Special Olympics of Nevada.

Boys & Girls Club of Western Nevada site of the next YBP event

One of the most important kids organizations in our city is the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada.

Billed as the Positive Place for Kids, nearly 500 kids have called this newly built club home for the summer. Here kids play and learn in a safe environment while parents are at work.

During the school year, the club is open after school so kids need not be "latchkey kids."

Funded primarily by community donations, grants and a portion of the Question 18 tax monies, the new club house is a showplace.

Missing Carson City boy found safe at Boys and Girls Club

A young boy has been found safe, reportedly at the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada, authorities report this afternoon. The boy was found at about 4:30 p.m. and is now with family members.
The boy was reported missing at about 3:20 today from Fritsch Elementary. Authorities combed the area looking for the child, going street-by-street and block-by-block, and at area parks. Deputies also made contact with registered sex offenders.
The 5-year-old boy's mother was told by a school official that the child was seen getting into a car.
