Opinion: Sales tax incentives a bad idea
By Jim Shirk
Some civic leaders tend to invest our city funds into one business proposal in the community then move to another and then another. This tax will become the next great example of that strategy.
The only appetite that existed for redevelopment funds came from the very business receiving the funding; enter the new appetite - tax incentives. Haven’t we learned by now that giving away our City funds did not produced or substantial growth. Some may attempt to argue it had and are now creating this so called new tax incentive so the continuation of diverting our city funds maybe persevered.
One of the primary goals of our City leaders is to generate enduring wealth for our community. Yes we need more business - yes we need more good jobs – and what we do not need is more smoke and mirrors.
The State will use this tax incentive as an excuse to hit our budget with more unfunded mandates because apparently we can do with less in our budget.
The real problem lies in structuring of these types of lackadaisical approaches of trying to solve our local economy woes by selecting and helping certain business rather than across the board fairness to all business and all citizens. Approving this particular measure would be unfair and will eventually cost the community revenue.
I urge all citizens to contact the Board of Supervisors and let them know never to approve this measure or any similar measure.
