Carson City volunteers to build a new community playground
Through the efforts of hundreds of volunteers, and with the strong support and leadership provided by Let Them Be Kids, Bordewich Bray E.S. in Carson City will build a brand new playground for its Kindergarten area.
Bordewich Bray Elementary School serves the district’s autistic students but was lacking an appropriate play area for their kindergarten classes, so when two young ladies, Nia and Nadia Hill saw that their little brother Kian, who is on the autism spectrum, did not have proper play equipment, they contacted Let Them Be Kids and Bordewich Bray E.S. was given a National Award which will provides playground equipment that is beneficial to students with Autism and every kindergartener that attends the school.
There were a few stipulations that come with the award and one of them is that the community has to pitch in and build it like an old fashion “barn raising.” Therefore, over a hundred volunteers will be on hand, Saturday, December 8 to build the playground.
The volunteers will also give the school a “makeover” to include: flowerbed clean up, field striping, creation of a covered sandbox, painting of a USA map on the playground and clean-up of parking lot area. Another stipulation of the award is that Bordewich Bray had to raise the money to ship the playground to Carson City. Several local businesses have also helped out with not only monetary donations but in-kind support in order to prepare the area for the new playground.
The one-day event Saturday, Dec. 8 will begin at 8 a.m. and with a formal dedication ceremony at 1 p.m. where the playground will be dedicated to three different community heroes.
Anyone interested in volunteering to help with the project can register at www.bordewichbray.ltbk.ca and donations for the project can be made at Bordewich Bray Elementary School at 110 S, Thompson St., Carson City, NV or by calling 775-283-2400.
The Bordewich Bray project is one of 160 projects across the United States and Canada donated by Let Them Be Kids to facilitate the makeover while helping to build a strong sense of community among the volunteers. For its inspiring service to children and their communities, it was named by the World Leisure Congress as “one of the four most innovative social leisure programs in the world!” Let Them Be Kids is a charitable world-wide program which acts as a catalyst to build community capacity while building playgrounds in areas of need.
For more information, call the school at (775) 283-2400 or volunteer Gina Hill at (775) 882-6901.
