Carson City skaters take to the ice, Arlington arena celebrates sixth season

Ice skating enthusiasts of all ages burned off Thanksgiving dinner and then some Friday by lacing up the blades and getting their axels, spirals and swizzles in overdrive at Carson City's Arlington Square Ice Rink for the opening day.

Thursday's leftovers made for Friday's high-energy ice skating among children, teenagers, young adults and parents at the rink, now celebrating its six season. The facility is located at the corner of North Carson Street and West Robinson Street across from the Carson Nugget. The facility offers skate rentals, a warming tent, snacks and beverages and plenty of thrills (and spills) for the family.

Alexandria Sharp, an 11-year-old Bordewich Bray Elementary student who learned how to ice skate this summer at an Oakland, Calif., indoor rink, earns bragging rights as being the first customer to hit the ice at 10 a.m., with cousin Madison Crozier, 6, right behind her.

Families, couples, and teenagers made up Friday's mix of ice enthusiasts, taking in the warm rays of sunshine and holiday time off before heading back home or to the shopping centers. Ben Lindbloom of Carson City brought his daughter Alivia along with Leah Skinner and her daughter Karlee, 5.

'It's a really nice way to kick off the season," said Lindbloom. "A great place to bring the girls."

The facility offers skate rentals, a warming tent, snacks and beverages and plenty of thrills for the family. The soundtrack music at the rink Friday was a fitting mixture of favorite holiday classics, with future skate days promising a variety of contemporary and classic rock n' roll music intertwined with the holiday songs.

Skate sessions are:
