Nevada Department of Public Safety appoints new Parole and Probation Division Chief
Nevada Department of Public Safety Director George Togliatti has appointed Thomas Lawson as Chief of the Nevada DPS, Parole and Probation Division. The appointment is effective Monday, Nov. 16, 2020.
Anne Carpenter, who was recently appointed to Colonel of the Nevada DPS, Highway Patrol Division, previously held the position.
"Tom Lawson brings a depth of knowledge to the position having worked within multiple Divisions," said DPS Director Togliatti. "His experience is an asset as the Department continues to unify its resources to provide the highest level of public safety services to Nevadans."
Lawson's 31 years of law enforcement service began at the age of 16 as a Law Enforcement Explorer with the Douglas County Sheriff's Department. In 1993, at the age of 21, he was sworn-in as a Reserve Deputy Sheriff, also with the Douglas County Sheriff's Department.
Lawson joined the Nevada DPS in 1996 as a Trooper with the Highway Patrol Division, working first in Mesquite and then in Carson City. He was promoted to Sergeant, working Traffic Operations in Las Vegas and Reno before supervising the Northern Command Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT).
Following his promotion to the rank of Lieutenant, Lawson established NHP's Research and Planning section. Other assignments included overseeing the Commercial Enforcement and MAIT for the Northern Command, overseeing the Carson, Tahoe, Minden Operations District, and serving as the Statewide Coordinator for NHP's Multidisciplinary Investigation and Reconstruction Teams (MIRT).
In 2017, Lawson was promoted to Captain of the Nevada DPS, Parole and Probation Division, overseeing Personnel, General Services, Fleet, Warrants and Extraditions, and the Pre-Release Units within the Division Headquarters.
"It is an incredible honor to serve as Chief of the Division of Parole and Probation. The men and women of the Division, both sworn and civilian staff, are dedicated to the mission of safeguarding Nevada through community supervision. I am proud of the work they do, and I feel extremely privileged to have been asked to guide this team into the future." Said Chief Lawson.
Lawson earned a Bachelor of Public Administration in Law Enforcement with a business minor at Nevada State College. He has also completed the Northwestern University Center for Public Safety's School of Police Staff and Command.
