Carson City weather: Rain into Friday, clearing for Saturday's Nevada Day festivities, rain Sunday
Two wet storms will affect the Carson City area beginning late Thursday into Friday, with clearing and dry conditions Saturday and a return of rain by Sunday, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.
The heaviest precipitation is expected Thursday night into Friday morning and again on Sunday.
Snow levels will be very high with the first system with most Sierra passes remaining wet. The only passes that have any chance of seeing snow are Tioga and Sonora, but impacts from snow will likely be short-lived, according to the weather service.
Plenty of spillover is expected into western Nevada and the wet conditions will make for a slower commute Friday morning across the region, said National Weather Service Meteorologist Dawn Johnson. The weather service advises to clear fallen autumn leaves from storm gutters and drainages to minimize flooding risk from heavy rain.
Downtown Carson City will begin its Carson Street open house at noon with a ribbon-cutting ceremony in front of the Capitol. Some clearing is possible later Friday with some lingering showers. We will provide updates on weather and any event changes.
The weather service also anticipates clearing Saturday throughout the day without the rain, which is when most Nevada Day activities launch, but then a return of rain early Sunday morning and will extend throughout the day.
Nevada Day revelers on Saturday can expect partly sunny skies with some breezy conditions, 10 to 20, with gusts to 35 mph.
Travel wise, the best window will be from roughly Friday night through Saturday afternoon with lingering rain showers, according to the weather service.
As far as the storm goes, the weather service advises the greatest concern will be the potential for rock slides or debris flows around steep terrain or recent burn scars including, but limited to Little Valley, Marina, and Emerald fires.
Colder air will allow snow levels to drop to Sierra passes Saturday night into Sunday with increased potential for travel impacts.
