Carson City September unemployment falls to 5.6 percent, down more than 1 percent over year
Carson City's unemployment rate fell to 5.6 percent in September, down more than 1 percent over last year, according to figures released Tuesday by the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.
In September, unemployment rates in all three of the Silver State’s major population centers fell more than one percentage point over the year, in addition to experiencing a drop of 0.4 percentage point each over the month.
Carson City and Las Vegas were home to unemployment rates of 5.6 percent, both down from August’s rate of 6 percent. In September 2015, the unemployment rate in Carson City was 6.8 percent.
In Reno/Sparks, unemployment stood at 4.5 percent in September, down from 4.9 percent in August, a decrease of 1.3 percentage points from the same month last year. As reported last week, the statewide unemployment rate fell to a seasonally adjusted 5.8 percent.
Carson City employment remained steady as actual job losses matched the expected seasonal drop of 100. Reno/ Sparks realized some improvement by gaining 2,800 jobs when only 1,100 were expected to be added, resulting in a seasonally adjusted employment gain of 1,700.
In addition to the major metropolitan areas, unemployment rates are also down across all 17 counties in Nevada, ranging from a low of 4.1 percent in Elko to a high of eight percent in Mineral.
“Despite monthly volatility in job growth, the metro areas continue to experience positive economic improvement,” said Bill Anderson, chief economist for the Research and Analysis Bureau of Nevada’s Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation. “All three of the state’s largest population centers saw annual gains in employment.”
