Carson City fifth graders dissect owl pellets at Children’s Museum
Fifth graders from Bordewich Bray Elementary in Carson City got some hands-on biology lessons Tuesday at the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada.
The walking field trip was made possible by a generous donation from Adams Hub for Innovation and the Hop and Mae Adams Foundation.
The organizations provided funding for entry fees to the museum, supplies and materials for the lessons as well as instructors for the class. Four of the fifth grade classes were able to attend the field trip.
Students learned about northern Nevada owl species, in particular, the great horned owl. They learned about the owl’s digestive habits and common components of their diets.
The most excited part of the lesson involved students dissecting regurgitated owl pellets where they had to identify what types of animals were consumed based upon what bones and other biomaterials they discovered while sifted through the pellet.
