Nevada Guard, Carson City community remember victims of 2011 IHOP shooting, memorial unveiled
On Sunday morning, 40 Nevada National Guardsmen and community members participated in the ninth annual memorial run/walk remembering those who were killed at the IHOP in Carson City on Sept. 6, 2011.
Unveiled at the ceremony was a memorial created outside the new Chase Bank that was built this year on the site of the former restaurant. Go here to see a video of the memorial ceremony.
For making the memorial possible, the Nevada National Guard thanks Merlone Geier Partners, which owner of the shopping center, Chase Bank, KDC Construction and Cinderlite for the locally sourced granite and Julie's Sign Shoppe.
On Sept. 6, 2011, Nevada Guardsmen Lt. Col. Heath Kelly, 35, Master Sgt. Christian Riege, 38, and Sgt. 1st Class Miranda McElhiney, 31, were killed in a shooting rampage. Florence Donovan-Gunderson, 67, was also killed during the incident. All three of the soldiers worked at the Office of the Adjutant General on Fairview Drive in Carson City.
Lt. Col. Laura Boldry, an officer in the Nevada Army National Guard, an organizer of the event said the memorial and the run/walk remains a fitting way to remember the three Guardsmen and Donovan-Gunderson.
