Nevada sportsbooks offer prop bet on unique double: Ernie Els at British, Dan Quinn at Lake Tahoe
LAKE TAHOE — The possibility of Ernie Els and his part-time PGA Tour caddy, Dan Quinn, both winning their prominent golf tournaments on July 21 is a proposition bet in Nevada Sportsbooks this week.
Els will be defending his title at the 2013 British Open on the same weekend that Quinn, the former National Hockey League star, will be trying to repeat at the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament in Lake Tahoe.
Harrah’s/Harveys Lake Tahoe Race and Sportsbook is offering bettors 85-1 that the double will happen and 1-105 that it will not. The prop bet is available at most Nevada sports betting parlors. The British Open at Muirfield in Scotland is expected to finish about five hours before the American Century Championship at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course in Lake Tahoe.
Steve Schorr, Director of the Harrah’s/Harveys Lake Tahoe Race & Sportsbook, said, “It has happened twice before (2002, 2012), so it’s not impossible. Dan has won five times here in Lake Tahoe, so we think there will be some interest. Ernie Els finished fourth at the U.S. Open and won the BMW International. Can lightning strike a third time?”
Quinn, who has caddied for Els in over 40 tournaments since 2010, said, “I wish they would have had that proposition up at this time last year (smile). Do I think Ernie will contend at the British Open? Absolutely! And I think I can contend at the American Century. I know people, for sure, who will be on that proposition.”
At 7-2, Quinn is the top choice of Harrah’s/Harveys Lake Tahoe Race & Sportsbook to win the 24th annual celebrity golf tournament, ahead of many other big-name players including: John Smoltz (5-1), John Elway (10-1), Jerry Rice (30-1), Ray Allen (40-1), Steph Curry, Chipper Jones and Aaron Rodgers (50-1), Alex Smith and Michael Phelps (100-1), Steve Spurrier (200-1), and Shane Battier, Ray Romano and Urban Meyer (300-1). Celebrated perennial longshot Charles Barkley is listed at 500-1.
Els (Jupiter, FL) and Quinn (Palm Beach Gardens, FL) are South Florida friends who met through their elementary school-age daughters. Quinn packs for Els in most of his U.S. events and was with the four-time major winner for the U.S. Open at Merion, where he placed fourth after moving into contention on Sunday.
“He loves the game and he’s a huge competitor, as you can well imagine, playing in the (National) Hockey League for such a long time. I think we’re having a good time. We’ve had some really good finishes,” Els said of Quinn at his pre-U.S. Open press conference last month.
Quinn, who last played for the Philadelphia Flyers (1995-1996) and the Pittsburgh Penguins (1986-1990 and 1996-1997), has competed at Lake Tahoe every year since 1991, winning in 1992, 2001, 2002, 2005, and 2012 and finishing in the top ten 19 times.
The 54-hole tournament will be televised live by NBC Sports and NBC Sports Network from July 19-21. On Friday, July 19, NBC Sports Network will air the tournament from 4-7 p.m. ET; 1-4 p.m. PT. NBC will broadcast the event on Saturday, July 20 and Sunday, July 21 from 3-6 p.m. ET; Noon-3 p.m. PT.
Tournament title sponsor, American Century Investments, is a leading, privately-controlled investment management firm serving professionals, institutions, corporations and individuals.
