Smoke from Trailhead Fire in Northern California could move into Carson City
Light to moderate smoke from the Trailhead Fire burning in El Dorado and Placer counties in Northern California may produce hazy conditions for the Carson City and Reno Thursday afternoon and into the evening, according to the National Weather Service.
New smoke carried into the region by zephyr westerly breeze, produced residual haze that moved into the region Thursday morning. Smoke and haze could impact most of Tahoe, Reno, Carson City areas and points east this afternoon or early evening, according to the weather service.
The Trailhead Fire burning in the steep terrain of the American River canyon has grown to 1,264 acres and remains 12 percent contained as of 1:20 Thursday afternoon. There are 2,600 structures threatened and 1,900 firefighting personnel on the scene.
Firefighters were able to make progress in limiting further spread on the Foresthill side of the river. The fire, burning in a larger area on the Eldorado National Forest side of the river, has burned at times aggressively throughout the day, according to CalFire.
Both the Placer and El Dorado County Sheriff's Departments imposed additional mandatory evacuation zones in an effort to protect residents in advance of the danger. The fire is now burning south of Otter Creek which is what prompted evacuations in El Dorado County.
Meanwhile, the weather conditions remain hot around Northern Nevada. Highs near 100 degrees are expected for lower elevations of western Nevada through Friday. A few thunderstorms are possible Thursday, mainly south of Highway 50, with the threat of storms expanding farther north on Friday as weak upper low approaches the Sierra.
Storms may linger into Saturday before drier conditions return early next week, according to the weather service.
