Carson City weather: Weekend activities may be soggy with rain in the forecast
Showers and thunderstorms may develop Friday afternoon around Carson City with the potential for heavier bands of precipitation arriving early Saturday morning, a National Weather Service forecaster said.
National Weather Service meteorologist Zach Colby said the brunt of Friday’s weather will be north of Interstate 80, possibly moving southward into the afternoon and early evening.
Saturday’s weather will likely be a moderate to heavy precipitation event with rain and, to a lesser extent, a chance of thunderstorms, Colby said.
“The heaviest rain might be from sunrise to noon. It may clear up in the afternoon with scattered thunderstorms and intermitted sunshine,” he said. For Saturday around Carson City, rainfall amounts could be between a quarter and half of an inch.
Sunday is looking a little better, with less of a chance of showers and thunderstorms from I-80 South into Mono County.
“It’s not looking like Sunday will have the same potential for rain as today and Saturday,” said Colby.
The rain may be soggy for many weekend Carson City events, including the Veterans Suicide Awareness Walk on the north end of Carson Street, the Downtown Carson City Wine Walk, activities at the Nevada Railroad Museum and the annual RSVP Spring Celebration and Carnival at Mills Park.
RSVP Executive Director Susan Haas said organizers will monitor the weather as it happens as they did Thursday night, which was the opening night of the 31st annual Spring carnival event.
Despite the rain, events did go off with venders and crafters selling their wares and a few people coming to enjoy the food. Saturday’s activities include the carnival, and the Day of Service program featuring booths from the Ron Wood Family Resource Center, FISH, and the mobile unit of Veterans Services among others.
Carnival rides usually go even when it is raining but are suspended when there is lightning and thunder, she said.
“The weather in Carson City changes and we will adjust to the changes,” said Haas. “We encourage everyone to watch the weather as we’ll be doing and come on out, especially when there’s a break in the weather and the sun is shining.”
