2019 Nevada Law Enforcement Memorial on Thursday at Capitol to recognize fallen officers
In conjunction with National Police Week, the 22nd Annual Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial ceremony will be held this Thursday, May 2 at the capitol grounds in Carson City.
The 1 p.m. service will honor the 134 Nevada Peace Officers who died in the line of duty. In 1998, the memorial was dedicated on the Capitol grounds to recognize the ultimate sacrifice these officers made in service of their communities.
The first officer killed in the line of duty was Carson County Nevada Territory Sheriff John L. Blackburn who was killed in 1861 while making an arrest. The Memorial will be honoring two officers killed in the line of duty.
Officer Kyle Lawrence Eng of the Las Vegas Department of Public Safety, Division of Corrections, suffered a fatal heart attack on July 19, 2018 shortly after struggling with an inmate in the Las Vegas Detention Center.
Also, Park Ranger James P. Fleetwood died on July 5, 1977 when his vehicle was struck head-on by a drunk driver while en route to a parade detail in Searchlight, Nev.
The service will begin with the presentation of colors by the combined Nevada Law Enforcement Honor Guard and the delivery of a runner’s memorial baton.
The baton is being relayed by Nevada peace officers from Las Vegas to Carson City. The Annual Law Enforcement Memorial Run began Wednesday, April 24, 2019. One leg of the run is completed in the memory of each officer listed on the memorial. This year marks the 20th anniversary of this run.
This year, Officer Eng will be honored at the memorial service. Chief Michele Freeman will dedicate his name in the memory of the ultimate sacrifice Eng made in the service of the citizens of Nevada.
National Park Service Chief Adam Kelsey will dedicate Ranger Fleetwood’s name, honoring his ultimate sacrifice. The special keynote speaker will be Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak.
More than 100 Police Honor Guard members from across the state, accompanied by a Pipe and Drum Corp, buglers, rifles teams and horse mounted officers will participate in the memorial service.
