Carson City area weather: Breezy Thursday, rain showers possible Friday
Spring weather changes will continue this week with cooler temperatures and the potential for rain showers around Carson City and snow showers in the higher elevations of the Sierra, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.
Forecasters remain uncertain at this time if the system will split, with the brunt of it remaining to the north or move further south. This would affect the strength of the system as it moves from the Lake Tahoe into the Carson City region.
At this time, temperatures will remain 10-15 degrees above average through Thursday with winds on the increase during the afternoon. Surface winds could remain gusty overnight Thursday with peak surface winds expected Friday gusting to 25-35 mph.
This system is relatively quick moving with the heaviest precipitation currently expected to impact the area Friday. For Carson City, Carson Valley and Dayton areas, there’s a 50 percent chance of rain showers during the day and a 70 percent chance during the evening hours. Friday and Saturday’s high temperatures will struggle to reach 60, according to the National Weather Service. Saturday and Sunday may bring only a slight chance of showers, about 20 percent.
As for the Sierra, there is still much uncertainty with how far and how fast snow levels will drop as the cold front moves into the area. For now, forecasters say there may be heavy rain over the Sierra passes that could change into snow at some point Friday, especially in the evening.
