Spring Fling Concert April 23 at Carson City Community Center
Carson City Symphony's Strings in the Schools ensembles, conducted by Education Director Sue Jesch, will present a "Spring Fling" concert on Thursday, April 23 at the Carson City Community Center. The concert will include music by Vivaldi, Dvorak, Lennon & McCartney, and more. Admission is free.
The concert will feature performances by students from grade 2 through high school, including beginning violins and cellos, the intermediate String Ensemble, Pizzazz, and STRAZZ. The program includes familiar works and some surprises. David Bugli, conductor of the Carson City Symphony, said, "Some of these students have been in the program since it began in 2005 and are an inspiration to the younger players."
Strings in the Schools, now in its 10th year, is Carson City Symphony Association's tuition-free, after-school program for young string players. About 150 students currently participate. The program is supported, in part, by public funds through grants from the Nevada Arts Council and Partnership Carson City, and by private donations. For more information, see CCSymphony.com or call Sue Jesch at 775-450-5584. The concert begins at 6:30 p.m.
In other performances, the Carson City Symphony, directed by Bugli, presents a concert on Sunday, April 26, 4 p.m., at the Carson City Community Center's Bob Boldrick Theater, 851 E. William Street in Carson City. The concert includes Mozart's Concerto in C for Flute and Harp, K.299, featuring Sally Turk on flute and Michael Langham on harp. Also on the program is Brahms' "Academic Festival Overture," Mozart's "Te Deum" (with the Symphony Chorus), and Grieg "Lyric Suite."
Pre-show entertainment will be presented in the lobby starting at 3:00 p.m. The audience is also invited to a free concert preview in the Sierra Room at 3:15 p.m. The preview, hosted by Conductor David Bugli, will include discussions about the composers and music being performed and history of the solo instruments.
Tickets are $15 general admission; $12 for seniors, students, and Symphony Association members; and free for youth age 16 and under.
On May 9, Strings in the Schools will present a Harmonica Workshop for String Players at a location to be determined. Harmonica player Tom Stryker and composer Gary Edwards will lead the workshop, likely to begin at 10:00 a.m. Details are being finalized, but the workshop will likely involve a discussion about the harmonica, a class on how to play the harmonica, rehearsals, a potluck lunch, and a concert, free and open to the public, at 3:00 p.m.
