Carson City weather: Snow blankets region, slows freight haulers and work commuters
Winter weather continued overnight in the Sierra and into the valley floors, causing headaches for the likes of not only Tuesday morning commuters trying to maneuver the roads, but big rig freight haulers who are stuck on Interstate 80 near the Nevada state line due to heavy snow.
Chains and snow tires are required over all Sierra passes. Morning valley commuters can expect slick conditions as NDOT and Carson City Public Works continue to plow through the few inches of snow that dropped overnight, coating local roadways.
While westbound I-80 in the Sierra was opened as of around 6 a.m., eastbound I-80 remained closed and then reopened at just after 8 a.m. The reason? Multiple spinouts overnight, including big rigs that jack-knifed, shutting down the interstate between Colfax, Calif., and the Nevada state line.
The backed up Interstate, viewed by traffic cameras overnight along the I-80 Sierra corridor, were packed with big rigs hauling freight from California eastward. No doubt a lot of that freight would be packed with food and essentials headed to supermarkets, which are experiencing some shortages to due coronavirus concerns.

Meanwhile, the sun is beginning to shine around Carson City. A winter weather advisory remains in effect Tuesday morning until 11 a.m. that extends from the Sierra and Lake Tahoe, into Reno, Virginia City, Carson City and Carson Valley.
