Legislative aide jailed after interfering with deputy following DUI crash

A 29-year-old Carson City man, who listed his occupation as a legislative assistant, was arrested early Sunday morning in the 800 block of South Saliman Road on misdemeanor charges of obstructing and delaying an officer, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

According to the arrest report, a deputy responded to the area after midnight for a report of a non-injury accident. On scene the officer made contact with the female driver, later arrested on suspicion of DUI, as well as the adult male passenger.

The 29-year-old passenger refused to allow the officer to conduct a DUI investigation, by repeatedly interrupting the officer and screaming at him, calling him a “white racist cop.” The deputy is Asian. The officer ordered the man to stop interrupting the investigation several times, and he was warned he would be arrested for obstructing and delaying a peace officer. The man refused, continued to be belligerent and the officer finally informed the man he was being arrested on those listed charges.

The man refused to turn around and place his hands behind his back. The officer was able to get handcuffs on him. Four witnesses provided statements regarding the incident. He was taken to jail where he submitted to a preliminary breath test with a .28. Bail: $1,006.

Meanwhile, the driver of the vehicle, a 26-year-old Carson City woman, was arrested at 12:37 a.m. Sunday on suspicion of DUI. The woman told officers she had been drinking and agreed to participate in standardized field sobriety tests. She showed signs of impairment on all tests and refused to complete a preliminary breath test, according to the arrest report.

The woman replied she had two drinks. She was asked if she would be willing to perform field sobriety tests in which she agreed and performed them unsatisfactorily, with two tests having to be stopped for the woman’s safety. On the way to the jail, the man urinated in the back of the patrol car after telling the officer he had to “take a piss.” He told officers at jail he wouldn’t participate in evidentiary tests and a judge was called and a search warrant granted that allowed for blood tests.
