It's Your City: Panel discusses aging in Nevada
This week's edition of It's Your City features last month's presentation on aging by the Sanford Center on Aging. The forum was held Jan. 24 at the Brewery Arts Center in Carson City.
Nevada is one of the fastest aging states in the country. Data regarding the aging of Nevada and current statewide initiatives to address aging and dementia were discussed.
Peter Reed, Sanford Center Director, was joined by Sanford Center Social Services Director Kelley Macmillan and Operations Director Gary Aldax for a discussion of the implications of an aging population in terms of health and well-being and emerging workforce needs.
The video of the presentation below is an hour and 53 minutes. Go here for the video if you have trouble viewing it below.
Coming up Tuesday, Feb. 28 will be something many are familiar with given the divisive nature of the politics. The forum is titled "Finding Common Ground Exercising Free Speech, and Speaking Civilly Amidst Political Polarization."
The forum will feature Dr. Katharine Schweitzer, Assistant Professor of Philosophy, at University of Nevada, Reno; Dr. Patrick File, Assistant Professor of Media Law, UNR and Dr. Amy Pason Assistant Professor of Communication
Studies, UNR.
Doors open at 5:30 p.m. The presentation begins at 6 p.m. The forum will be held at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall, 511 West King St., in Carson City.
The following is from the Sierra Nevada Forums website:
It seems that citizens have never been more divided in their politics, and where it seems impossible to discuss social issues with those “across the aisle” without succumbing to personal attacks or hostile rhetoric. Even our elected representatives seem unable to reach consensus or agree on what the main issues facing our country are. This forum seeks to work against these trends to help us understand how our political discourse has become uncivil and how we can work to engage with our families and other citizens to work towards the common good. Whether we want to blame fake news or politics as usual, panelists will show how it still is possible to have civil discourse and overcome barriers to effective discussion.
