Highway 50 remains closed at Cave Rock, Kyburz; Route between North and South Tahoe opens
Travelers hoping to get to Tahoe have some routes to take. Caltrans has opened State Route 89 along the west shore of Lake Tahoe, enabling motorists to travel between the north and south end of the lake without having a multi-hour detour.
Highway 50 at Logan Creek near Cave Rock on the east shore of Lake Tahoe remains closed due to an unstable hillside above the road. Motorists attempting to get to south shore Lake Tahoe can take State Route 207 over Kingsbury Grade.
Crews from Caltrans and private contractors are working on clearing several mudslides near Kyburz and Sand Flat along Highway 50, which is closed. The road will remained closed during the day on Monday but could open by evening if progress is made and travel is determined to be safe, according to Caldrons. It could be longer, so those needing to travel west should plan other routes.
For westbound travelers, motorists attempting to get to the Central Valley and San Francisco Bay area, and those attempting to head east can take I-80, which has been opened for travel since Saturday and they can take State Route 88. Go here for the current maps from CalTrans that show which routes are open and closed.
The following is a news release from Tahoe South regarding best routes to travel:
Feb. 13, 2017 (SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev.) – The Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority is working with California Department of Transportation and Nevada Department of Transportation to communicate current road situations that have impacted travel to/from the Lake Tahoe Basin. The recent mudslides along Echo Summit/Highway 50 and fallen rocks at Cave Rock/Highway 50 have led to temporary road closures. Both departments are working diligently to reopen once conditions are safe (http://tahoesouth.com/).
“We commend both Caltrans and NDOT for their efforts with extremely challenging circumstances,” said Carol Chaplin, president and CEO of the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority. “With the record amount of snowfall we’ve received this winter we appreciate their diligence to ensure safe traveling over mountain passes.”
LTVA recommends the following alternative routes:
From Sacramento/Northern California take I-80 E to CA-89 S (Emerald Bay Road) to South Lake Tahoe
From Sacramento/Northern California take CA-16 E to CA-49 N to CA-88 E past Kirkwood to CA 89 N into South Lake Tahoe
To access South Shore from Reno, Carson City, and Carson Valley Kingsbury SR 207 is open
LTVA recommends motorists to check conditions with Caltrans www.dot.ca.gov and Nevada Department of Transportation http://nvroads.com for current conditions, including temporary closures.
