Lake Tahoe Brewing Company closes Carson City location
Lake Tahoe Brewing Company owner Michael Candelario announced this week that the downtown Carson City location at the corner of South Carson and West Proctor streets is "temporarily closing."
Candelario sent a letter to his employees earlier this week stating that the brewery had been operating at reduced capacity because of problems with their brewing equipment. He later confirmed to Carson Now that the main problem is with the boiler unit that they are not able to fix.
While the letter said that the closing is temporary, it encouraged employees to "pursue other opportunities" and that final paychecks would be handed out today.
A similar letter attached to the front door of the business says that they are "temporarily closed effective immediately as a result of unfulfilled contractual obligations and promises pertaining to our brewing equipment from our property owner."
Adams 302 N. Carson LLC, the owner of the building, has filed a lawsuit to terminate the lease, claiming rent has not been paid. A copy of the lease attached the lawsuit contradicts what the letter says, and calls for the lessee to be responsible for all maintenance and repairs for the equipment inside the brewery, including the boiler.
The brewery opened in Carson City last spring, and quickly opened three more locations in Reno, Fernley and Truckee. Candelario said he would keep the other three locations open.
In related news, a press release was issued today by High Sierra Brewing Company announcing a merger with Lake Tahoe Brewing Company:
NEVADA CRAFT BREWERS TO MERGE
Lake Tahoe Brewing Company and High Sierra Brewing Company have recently merged, and will brew and distribute both their independent brews and new lines of craft beers to be released later this year.
"This is a perfect match for us and we are extremely pleased to reach an agreement with Lake Tahoe Brewing Co. to expand our capacity and reach in the craft beer market," said J. Grant Lincoln, Managing Partner of High Sierra Brewing Company. "Both companies share the same passion about craft brew, and consolidating our efforts furthers reaffirms that commitment."
All brewing will be done entirely out of the Sparks brewery location, located at 865 S. Rock Blvd. in Sparks, where they will produce a variety of custom brewed beers including the current High Sierra Brewing Company and Lake Tahoe Brewing Co. favorites, as well as the fast growing Battle Born series and a new line of seasonals and specialty beers under new labels.
The company's retail locations, which operate under the High Sierra Brewing Company and Lake Tahoe Brewing Co. brands, will remain independent operations and will now be able to offer even more beers at their locations.
"The craft beer market is very competitive and by consolidating our resources and people along with our great brands we feel we are going to be very well positioned to become a much larger player in the Nevada craft industry," said Michael Candelario, Founder of Lake Tahoe Brewing. "This is a great fit for both companies and we look forward to continuing to produce the quality beers both companies have been known for as well as adding some new beers that we think will be very successful in the market."
Jim Phalan, who first opened High Sierra Brewing Company in Carson City before shutting down in 2014, announced earlier this month that he parted ways with his partners in that business, which is now operating out of Baldini's Casino in Sparks. Phalan continues to own and operate the Firkin & Fox in downtown Carson City.
Lake Tahoe Brewing Company is the fourth brewery to occupy that space.
