Weather Service warns snow possible in Carson City region for Tuesday night commute
With freezing temperatures and snow levels expected to drop, the National Weather Service issued a Winter Weather Advisory from Tuesday afternoon to early Wednesday morning for the greater Reno, Carson City and Carson Valley areas.
Snow is expected with the arrival of the first storm. Total snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches, with local amounts of 4 to 6 inches are possible above 5,000 feet, according to the weather service, which issued the advisory from 4 p.m. Tuesday to 4 a.m. Wednesday.
The weather service advises travel conditions are expected to deteriorate for at least a portion the Tuesday evening commute and that motorists can expect much longer commute times than usual.
A Winter Weather Advisory for snow means periods of snow will cause primarily travel difficulties. Expect snow covered roads and limited visibilities. If possible, consider adjusting your commute to before 4 or 5 p.m. to avoid the worst travel conditions.
Meanwhile, a Winter Storm Watch has been issued for Lake Tahoe and Sierra on Wednesday, with snowfall increasing Tuesday.
Moderate snow with accumulations of 5 to 10 inches, except 10 to 18 inches west of Highway 89, are expected. For Wednesday night through Thursday: 2 to 4 feet possible above 7,000 feet. Below 7,000 feet, 8 to 18 inches, possibly as much as 15 to 30 inches if precipitation remains all snow.
Travel could be very difficult to impossible later Wednesday through Thursday with periods of white out conditions possible, especially in the higher elevations.
The weather service advises that now would be a good time to prepare an emergency kit for your home and car. If traveling consider alternate plans, remember to carry tire chains, extra food, water and clothing. Once the storm arrives, travel may be difficult or impossible for an extended period of time.
