Carson City schools chief among Nevada governor's Board of Education picks
Carson City School District Superintendent Richard Stokes was among four non-voting members appointed Monday by Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval to the State Board of Education. Two voting members were also appointed — Stavan Corbett of Clark County and Freeman Holbrook of Washoe County.
“Today’s appointments are the next steps in reforming the governance of K-12 education in our state, a process I began during the 2011 Legislative session,” Gov. Sandoval said. “Working to deliver the best education to our state’s children must be our highest priority.”
Sandoval previously announced he had appointed Elaine Wynn to the Board. The appointments of Corbett and Holbrook were based on nominations from the Senate Majority Leader and the Assembly Speaker.
The appointment of Stokes and three others in the non-voting block — Thad Ballard (Elko), Kevin Melcher (Elko), and Kamryn Mock (Clark County) — were based on nominations from the Nevada Association of School Boards, the Nevada Association of School Superintendents, the Board of Regents, and the Nevada Association of Student Councils in consultation with the Nevada Youth Legislature respectively.
The Board also includes four members elected by the general public. Those members include: Alexis Gonzales-Black, District 1; Carson City educator Dave Cook, District 2; Allison Serafin, District 3; and Mark Newburn, District 4.
State Superintendent of Public Instruction, James W. Guthrie, expressed his great excitement regarding all of the newly appointed and recently elected state board of education members. Guthrie said, “I am honored to work with such a team of widely experienced and committed individuals. I am confident that the State Board is now poised to provide Nevada's schools with the bold vision they need and the high quality instruction students deserve.”
Appointments to the Board are effective January 8, 2013.
