Celebrating Commitment: Carson High football hosts annual awards banquet
Carson High School football held its annual awards banquet Monday night in Carson City at Casino Fandango's new banquet room. The event was attended by more than 225 players, coaches, family members and supporters. Coach Blair Roman awarded his outgoing senior class various awards for their commitment to Carson football over the past 4 years and discussed the rebuilding process taking place in the program at this time.
Jonathon Acosta was named Most Outstanding Senior for 2018. He was recently named to the 4A All-Region team as a Punter. He was also 1st Team All-League at Defensive End and 2nd Team All-League at Tight End. Chance Smith, statistically Carson's most productive offensive player this season, was awarded the Carson Football Pride Award. Smith was named 1st Team All-League at Runningback in 2018.
Carl Cavner, a two year starter, who also started the Reno play-off game in 2016 as a sophomore, was a two-way performer last season and was named 2nd Team All-League at Offensive Guard, and registered 32 tackles at Defensive Tackle. Cavner was awarded Carson's Pat Houlihan Warrior Award.
Coach Roman also awarded Cole Ashton, Lucas Vanbrow, and Niko Desormier the perpetual Carson Football Scholar-Athlete Award. Desormier was named Academic All-State along with sophomore Jeremy Heaton.
Carson will return many starters and key contributors from last year's team, such as quarterback Jonny Laplante, Bradley Maffei (Runningback/Linebacker), Gilbert Vasquez (Runningback/Defensive Back), Sethro Griffith (Wide Receiver/Defensive Back), Jackson Kalicki (Kicker/Defensive Back), Manny Vasquez (Linebacker), Randy Herrera (Offensive Line), CJ Linkul (Offensive Line), Luke Konrad (Defensive End/Tight End), and Jeremy Heaton (Linebacker/Runningback).
Roman also mentioned several other underclassmen who we he was excited to see develop this off-season.
The JV team was also recognized at the banquet. The JV squad won their last three games of the season in 2018 to post a 3-1 Sierra League record last season. Carson's varsity team is slated to open the 2019 season at Lower Lakes High School on August 23, a rematch of last year's 34-27 victory at Carson High.
