The Northern Nevada Development Authority (NNDA) and Maurice White Part I
In Mr. White’s recent paranoid screed against the Northern Nevada Development Agency (NNDA) and against his political opponent, Supervisor Brad Bonkowski, is the classic example of the simplistic “argument of incredulity”. His argument is presented as such: “I don’t know anything about the NNDA, but I know it’s a “government agency”, and therefore it is bad”.
What White is suggesting and expects the voters of Carson City to accept him as a candidate for a local political office, is his somewhat stilted premise that: “I don’t know, therefore, I know”. His underdeveloped thought process is akin to saying: “I don’t know how those Egyptian’s built the Pyramid’s, so they must have been built by space aliens”.
The NNDA is a non-profit organization, has never been a government agency, has never functioned as a government agency, has no legal authority to enforce or dictate laws like a government agency, and does nothing more than present itself before the Carson City Board of Supervisors, like many other non-profit organizations in our city, with a request for funding to accomplish their stated and respective goals, but only if the Carson City Board of Supervisors deem it necessary and proper to further the interests of Carson City. It is purely a contractual relationship between the two entities in which both sides may accept or reject each others terms and conditions.
If the Carson City Board of Supervisors recognizes the need to enhance the economic growth and economic security of our town, and if an organization such as NNDA can aid and assist the Carson City Board of Supervisors in implementing a series of tasks that would lead to a reduction in unemployment, workforce education coupled with an emphasis on the retention of employers, then providing the funding (absent the irrational conspiracy theories) seems to be a rational public/private enterprise with NNDA,to bring these concepts into to recognition and application.
To the best of my knowledge, NNDA is the only economic development organization authorized to provide and administer the incentive programs offered by the State of Nevada. However, this does not mean by definition it is a government agency!
In the alternative reality White resides in, he believes that economic development groups such as the NNDA cannot provide any services or aid to the citizens of Carson City to enhance our quality of life and that only private groups should be working on issues of economic development.
If his line of reasoning has any validity at all, then it begs the question: “When the Great Recession hit Nevada, where were the private economic groups when Nevada lost over 6,000 manufacturing jobs?”
They left, and their not coming back!
