Students from all four classes recently nominated Carson High School Winterfest candidates for 2021 Winterfest week, Feb. 1-5, where both a King and Queen will be crowned. The theme, Destination Unknown, was decided upon; since students are not allowed to experience the vacations they love, they are bringing their vacation destinations to CHS.

For the week ending January 9, initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI) totaled 9,511, up 1,050 claims, or 12.4 percent, compared to the previous week’s total of 8,461 claims, according to finalized data from the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR).

Through the week ending January 9, there have been a total of 803,738 initial claims filed since the week ending March 14, 2020.

CARSON CITY — The military support organization Work for Warriors Nevada is set to host a no-cost, virtual job fair on Wednesday, Jan. 20, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. The fair will be online.

Nevada is moving to a new COVID-19 vaccination strategy that will allow the state to distribute doses to essential workers and priority segments of the population in tandem.

Carson City Health and Human Services announced last week that vaccinations would be moving into Tier 2 beginning on Monday, Jan. 11 starting with educators and daycare providers.

Jacqueline Milagros Acosta-Bruno was born Nov. 17, 2002 at Washoe Medical Center in Reno, Nev., to Claudia Bruno and Hector Acosta. She has four younger brothers and sisters, all attending Carson City Schools, as well as a sibling just 18-months-old.

For the week ending January 2, initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI) totaled 8,461, up 1,252 claims, or 17.4 percent, compared to the previous week’s total of 7,209 claims, according to data from the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR).

Since the week ending March 14, 2020, the first week Nevada saw claims increase due the pandemic, there have been a total of 794,227 initial claims filed.

CARSON CITY — According to finalized data from the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation, initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI) totaled 7,209 for the week ending December 26, down 589 claims, or 7.6%, compared to the previous week’s total of 7,798 claims.

CHS Senior Abby Golik, after being told Senior Projects, a Carson High School graduation requirement, were temporarily cancelled, decided she wanted to do a Senior Project anyway.

The Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR) announced that in order to conduct regular system updates, they are temporarily taking the Unemployment Insurance (UI) website, ui.nv.gov offline on Saturday, December 26th from 6 AM to midnight, a period of lower traffic. During this time, individuals will not be able to file claims or access the resource materials.

For the week ending December 12, initial claims for Unemployment Insurance (UI) totaled 9,027, up 244 claims, or 2.8 percent, compared to the previous week’s total of 8,783 claims, according to finalized data from the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR).

Carson City is facing the same problems other growing communities throughout the nation are: a lack of affordable housing which in turn is causing a gap in the workforce for important careers that require technical training.

This year has been extremely challenging and with the impact of Covid; many of our families are struggling to ensure they can celebrate Christmas. However, generous community members have come together determined to help these families have a Christmas celebration not even Covid can stop.

For the week ending December 5, initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI) totaled 8,783, up 2,341 claims, or 36.3 percent, compared to the previous week’s total of 6,442 claims, according to finalized data from the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR). This is only the second increase in regular initial claims activity since October 24. Through the week ending December 5, there have been a total of 783,384 initial claims filed in 2020, 761,732 of which have been filed since the week ending March 14.

For the week ending November 28, initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI) totaled 6,442, down 1,679 claims, or 20.7 percent, compared to the previous week’s total of 8,121 claims, according to finalized data from the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR).

Gov. Steve Sisolak is urging Nevadans to have hope but continue to follow coronavirus health and safety protocols with the state’s first allocation of the COVID-19 vaccine set to arrive as early as the middle of December.

CARSON CITY — For the week ending Nov. 21, initial claims for unemployment insurance totaled 8,121, up 871 claims, or 12.1 percent, compared to the previous week’s total of 7,243 claims, according to finalized data from the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation. Through the week ending Nov. 21, there have been a total of 768,159 initial claims filed in 2020, 746,507 of which have been filed since the week ending March 14.

For the week ending November 14, initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI) totaled 7,243, down 313 claims, or 4.1 percent, compared to last week’s total of 7,556 claims, according to finalized data from the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR). Through the week ending November 14, there have been 760,038 initial claims filed in 2020, 738,386 of which have been filed since the week ending March 14.

In the past several weeks Lyon County, City of Fernley and the City of Yerington have been flagged for elevated transmissions of COVID-19. Each Thursday at 10:00 AM we meet with the Nevada COVID Task Force to discuss our assessment and action plan.

For the week ending November 7, initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI) totaled 7,556, down 602 claims, or 7.4 percent, compared to last week’s total of 8,158 claims, according to finalized data from the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR). Through the week ending November 7, there have been 752,795 initial claims filed in 2020, 731,143 of which have been filed since the week ending March 14.

Gov. Steve Sisolak is asking Nevadans to voluntarily stay home for the next two weeks as COVID-19 cases spike statewide, warning that if the data doesn’t improve over that period he will be forced to take more drastic action.

Through the week ending October 17, there have been 728,045 initial claims filed in 2020, 706,393 of which have been filed since the week ending March 14.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation is warning businesses that an email with a subject line “Important Notice (Urgent Response Required)” is not from the agency, but a phishing email targeting Nevada employers.

According to finalized data from the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR), initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI) totaled 8,964 for the week ending October 10, up 1,023 claims, or 12.9 percent, compared to last week’s total of 7,941 claims.

Through the week ending October 10, there have been 719,311 initial claims filed in 2020, 697,659 of which have been filed since the week ending March 14.

Finalized data from the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR) show initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI) totaled 7,941 for the week ending October 3, up 416 claims, or 5.5 percent, compared to last week’s total of 7,525 claims.
