Capital City Reads: A Thousand Splendid Suns
CARSON CITY, NEVADA-The Carson City Library would like to invite the entire community to participate in a citywide reading initiative to discuss the timely, and powerful message found in Khaled Hosseini’s best seller, A Thousand Splendid Suns.
A community-book discussion will be held at the Carson City Library on Tuesday, April 10th, at 6:00 p.m. This event is one of a weeklong series of special events celebrating National Library Week; an annual celebration sponsored by the Friends of the Carson City Library.
Many book clubs have already read Hosseini’s first novel, the Kite Runner. Book clubs are encouraged to choose this second novel as their selected book-of-the-month. Patrons may pick up a copy of A Thousand Splendid Suns, while supplies last, at the Carson City Library.
A Thousand Splendid Suns is published by the Penguin Book Group. As noted on the jacket cover, this is an “incredible chronicle of thirty years of Afghan history and a deeply moving story of family, friendship, faith, and the salvation to be found in love…it is a haunting, heartbreaking, compelling story of an unforgiving time, an unlikely friendship, and an indestructible love.” Many major themes provide an opportunity for discussion, engagement, and dialogue. Themes such as oppression, shame, hope, love, war, and the education of Afghan women run throughout the novel.
The Carson City Library is celebrating National Library Week with a series of special programs to highlight the American Library Association’s theme You Belong @ Your Library! Events include an open house at the library and the Business Resource Innovation Center (BRIC) on Monday, April 9th, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The book discussion on A Thousand Splendid Suns will be held on Tuesday, the 10th, at 6:00 p.m.
On Wednesday, the 11th, the community is invited to attend a live stage presentation at the Bob Boldrick Theater in the Community Center. The presentation, readings from the Afghan Women’s Writing Project, will begin at 7:00 p.m. Several noted community personalities will participate in this compelling evening to include special guest readers: Carson City's First Lady Susan Crowell; Former Nevada System of Higher Education Regent Jill Derby who lived in Saudi Arabia from 1966-1969, and has a Ph.D. in Cultural Anthropology, with a specialization in Middle Eastern cultures; WNC professor Marilee Swirczek who in concert with Professor Don Carlson helped steward WNC's nationally acclaimed exhibit Always Lost: A Meditation on War, honoring America's military war casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan through, poetry, stories and images on an exceptional display known as the Wall of the Dead; Performing Artist Danita Bayer, and three media broadcasters.
On Thursday, the 12th, a film written and directed by Mohsen Makhmalbaf will be shown at 6:00 p.m. in the library auditorium. The film, “Kandahar” (2001) is about an Afghani-Canadian woman as she attempts to enter Afghanistan in search of her depressed sister during the Taliban era.
The weeklong events culminate with an author even. Jennifer Lauck, bestselling author of Blackbird: A Childhood Lost & Found, will be held on Friday, April 13th, at 7:00 p.m. For questions and information regarding National Library Week events call 775 887-2244 or logon to www.carsoncitylibrary.org.
