Always Lost: A Meditation on War

Western Nevada College invites the public to a reception for the final display of its nationally acclaimed traveling arts and humanities exhibition, “Always Lost: A Meditation on War.” The exhibition is in the main art gallery at the WNC Carson City campus, through July 29. Western Nevada College’s acclaimed arts and humanities exhibition about the costs of war will visit Reno, November 30 to January 15. “Always Lost: A Meditation on War” will be on display at the Washoe County Administration Complex, 1001 E. 9th St., Building B.

Start the week off with a dose of art. The traveling exhibit, Always Lost: A Meditation on War, will be leaving the Legislature building after Wednesday. Spring has Sprung at the Nevada Artist’s Association Gallery at the Brewery Arts Center. Thanks to the Capital City Arts Initiative, art now adorns the Sierra Room in the Community Center: the first exhibit is titled Tuscarora. Think about how art can enhance downtown if you attend the public input sessions regarding the upcoming downtown rejuvenation project.

Nevada Assemblyman PK O’Neill, District 40, has partnered with Western Nevada College Foundation in an effort to raise funds to continue the Always Lost: A Meditation on War exhibit’s national tour and ongoing maintenance.

Created in 2008 by Western Nevada College faculty and students as a class project to memorialize the costs of war, the exhibit most notably includes the Wall of the Dead comprised of photos and names of the U.S. service members that have fallen during the Afghanistan and Iraq wars since Sept. 11, 2001.

The Western Nevada College arts and humanities exhibition Always Lost: A Meditation on War returns to the Nevada Legislative Building ​April 6-22 ​during the 2015​ Legislative​ session.​ Always Lost will be on display in the second floor atrium​ of the Legislative Building​. A special opening ceremony is planned for Monday, April 6 from 10-10:30 a.m. in Room 1214.

Scheduled to speak at the opening are ​Senate Majority Leader Michael Roberson, Assembly Speaker John Hambrick, Nevada Military and Veterans Policy Director Caleb Cage and Carson City Mayor Robert Crowell.

Western Nevada College student veterans Aaron Endel (Active Army, Operation Iraqi Freedom) and Blaine Inman (Active Army, Operation Enduring Freedom) carry a banner for the nationally touring arts and humanities exhibition "Always Lost: A Meditation on War" which features the faces and names of U.S. military war dead in Iraq and Afghanistan since Sept. 11, 2001. The Carson City Board of Supervisors will pay tribute to the creators of the acclaimed Western Nevada College exhibit “Always Lost, a Meditation on War” when it meets Thursday, Oct. 2.

Many celebrations are scheduled throughout the Silver State in the month of August. These Nevada 150 events celebrate all things Nevada and help bring awareness to the 150th Anniversary of Statehood. The following events are held Aug. 15 through Aug. 31.

Douglas County is hosting the Western Nevada College “Always Lost: A Meditation on War” arts and humanities exhibition as part of a special Nevada Sesquicentennial tour sponsored by the Nevada Department of Veterans Services (NDVS). The exhibit will be on display at the Minden Inn August 25-September 12, 2014 and is free and open to the public. Viewing hours will be Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. with extended hours on Thursdays (August 28, Sept. 4 and Sept.

Many celebrations are scheduled statewide in the month of July. These Nevada 150 celebrate all things Nevada and bring awareness to the 150th Anniversary of Statehood. The following events are held July 18 through July 31.

I publicly wept when they looked at me. More than 6,500 young men and women fed into the meat grinder since 9/11.

Come prepared to cry when you stare into the faces of the snuffed. "Always Lost: A meditation on war" plays at the Nevada Legislature through May 3.

The name comes from Gertrude Stein who once opined that "war is never fatal but always lost." I could not disagree more with the former.

“Always Lost: A Meditation on War” has returned home to Carson City and was given full honors Wednesday at the Nevada Legislature.

I wanted nothing to do with Western Nevada College’s Always Lost: A Meditation on War project when English professor Marilee Swirczek presented the idea in 2009 of personalizing the Iraq/Afghanistan Wars through literary work, combat photos, and a wall displaying the faces of U.S. military war dead since Sept. 11, 2001.
