'The Vagina Monologues' at BAC to raise money for Advocates to End Domestic Violence
February 13 and 14, Carson City women will take the stage in support of Advocates to End Domestic Violence by performing Eve Ensler’s groundbreaking monologue play, “The Vagina Monologues” in the Performance Hall at the Brewery Arts Center.
This compelling show takes a look at the funny, fantastic, and occasionally frightening world of being female. It’s a journey of self-discovery, empowerment, abuse, and self-questioning staged to benefit a local charity that houses, counsels, and works on the front lines to protect victims of abuse in Carson City.
The play will have three showings, one on Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. and two shows on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Proceeds from the show will benefit Advocates to End Domestic Violence. There will be a silent auction and local advocacy organizations will be on hand to provide information and assistance.
Women are much more likely to be victims of intimate partner violence, with 85 percent of domestic abuse victims being women and 15 percent men. The all-female cast of “The Vagina Monologues” portrays a wide variety of women and tells a funny, and sometimes gut-wrenching, tale of the female experience.
Advocates to End Domestic Violence (Advocates) operates a 51 bed shelter that is designed to provide temporary refuge for women in crisis. The priority is to provide shelter to battered women and their children that have no place else to go.
They operate under the beliefs that:
• Every person is entitled to a safe environment free from violence, and the fear of violence.
• Every person is capable of change, and can assume responsibility for their own lives.
• Every person has unique needs, and is capable of making a unique contribution in life.
During a stay at the Shelter, staff at Advocates works to help you achieve those goals necessary for you to take control of your life, in order to have a life free of abuse.
Advocates also operates a 24-Hour Crisis Call Line at 775-883-7654. People seeking help with domestic violence related problems can call this line and receive help and advice any time, day or night. They also present a number of education programs to the community. For more information, visit aedv.org.
