Nevadans take home 1,517 cats and dogs during Maddie’s Pet Adoption Days

More than 50 animal shelters and rescue groups participated in Nevada’s large free pet adoption event, Maddie’s Pet Adoption Days. It was organized by Maddie's Pet Project in Nevada, a three-year campaign aimed at helping more homeless cats and dogs find good homes and creating a safety net for pets by improving access to veterinary care in the Silver State.

New York Times bestselling author visits Carson City, WNC's GEAR UP students

A select number of Western Nevada College students in Carson City had the privilege of meeting with a New York Times bestselling author on Thursday.

Jamming into the midweek, events lined up for Wednesday, Sept. 25 around the capital city include a Carson City Chamber's Soup's On luncheon with a primer on blockchain. The Northern Nevada Development Authority will host its monthly Business Edge meeting at Casino Fandango with a focus on Nevada's energy efficiency and sustainability initiatives. Also happening: Fusion cooking classes at Healthy Communities Coalition’s Dayton headquarters, plus the Veterans Resource Group will make a visit to the Dayton Food Pantry. There's also a Wine and Moondance Chocolate Pairing at Expresso Yourself inside the Brewery Arts Center, plus art workshops and showings, Salsa dancing and more.

NHP identifies victims in Sept. 14 crash in Lyon County that killed driver and passenger

The Nevada Highway Patrol is investigating a crash that happened Sept. 14, 2019 involving two vehicles in which two people died.

Healthy Communities Coalition announces its new initative to host representatives from different veterans resource groups once a month at each of its volunteer-powered food pantries in Lyon County. TMCC Veterans Upward Bound shared information at the Yerington Food Pantry on September 18th. They will be on hand at the Dayton Food Pantry to share information on Wednesday, September 25 from noon to 4pm. They will also be at the Silver Stage Food Pantry to share information on Wednesday October 2 from 1pm-4pm.

Lyon County group forms to address illegal dumping and promote ways to stop it

YERINGTON — Lyon County Code Enforcement held a meeting last week to address the problem of illegal dumping countywide. The Illegal Dumping Work Group, which represents a number of agencies and nonprofit organizations, will meet on a quarterly basis to continue collaboration and cooperation in its efforts to clean up areas where illegal dumping frequently happens.

Lyon County: Brush fire near Yerington contained after section of 95A closed

Firefighters in Lyon County were sent to a brush fire Thursday afternoon off US95A north of Wabuska Hill near Yerington. It was contained shortly before 3 p.m. and crews were mopping up, according to Lyon County officials via Twitter.

Central Lyon County investigates Silver Springs fire involving structures, vehicles

UPDATE TUESDAY: Fire Chief Rich Harvey from Central Lyon Fire tells News 4-Fox 11 that six to ten out buildings, about a dozen cars and two homes were destroyed by the fire. The cause is under investigation.

UPDATE 4:32PM: Central Lyon Fire and other agencies are fighting the wildland urban interface fire in Silver Springs. Resources from Yerington, Storey County, Lyon County Road Department and Carson City are responding. EMS is establishing a triage area, said Lyon County Manager Jeff Page. All people are advised to stay out of the area.

Northern Nevada Development Authority: Mineral County Joins Nevada’s Sierra Region

Northern Nevada Development Authority on Friday announced its economic development service area has been expanded to include Mineral County. The Nevada Governor’s Office of Economic Development \has designated NNDA as the regional development authority (RDA) for the county, effective July 1, 2019. Mineral County joins Nevada’s Sierra Region that also includes Carson City, Douglas County, Lyon County and Storey County.

Carson City Student-Owned-and-Run 'Rehaul' is a showcase in applied entrepreneurial lessons

Jeff Glass has been teaching entrepreneurial classes to the youth of Carson City for years, and now, as his students grow up, they’re branching out to run businesses of their own.

One such student is Paul Klemm, the owner of Carson City’s Rehaul.

“Rehaul started as an effort to develop a student run business,” said Glass.

Americorps Volunteers are Summertime Mentors at Boys and Girls Clubs

An Americorps National Civilian Community Corps Team, Green Four, will be working with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Mason Valley to mentor children enrolled in its summer program.

During the team’s six week engagement, the seven young adults will serve over 150 children spread between the Yerington, Silver Springs and Dayton Boys and Girls Club sites.

Rapid snowmelt prompts flood warning for portions of the Walker River

The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Flood Warning for the mainstem of the Walker River above Weber Reservoir. Flows along this portion of the river are expected to slowly rise this week and into the weekend in response to rapid snowmelt in the headwaters.

Heat to produce swift, cold river stream flows in Douglas, southern Lyon and Mono counties

Hot weather expected through Wednesday will trigger the return to rapid melting of high elevation snowpack, that will produce increased flows in the higher elevation tributary streams and swift, cold flows for rivers and streams in the lower valleys by midweek from Lake Tahoe south through Mono County, according to the National Weather Service.
