Governor's Office to appoint new commissioner in Lyon County following Commissioner Greg Hunewill's death
Following the passing of Lyon County Commissioner Greg Hunewill on Aug. 19, Governor Sisolak's Office will now be responsible for appointing the next Lyon County Commissioner to fill the vacancy.
Lyon County has been informed by the Governor’s Office that the replacement process will be:
The Board of Commissioners will be asked to pass a resolution declaring a vacancy of District 5 (Yerington, Mason Valley and Smith Valley). The resolution will then be filed with the Governor’s Office.
People interested in being appointed must be a registered Republican and must reside in District Five pursuant to NRS 244.040 NRS 244.040 Vacancy in office of county commissioner.
1. Any vacancy occurring in any board of county commissioners must be filled by appointment of the Governor. Except in Carson City, the Governor shall appoint a suitable person who is a member of the same political party as the most recent holder of the vacant office.
2. The term of office of a person appointed to the office of county commissioner does not, by virtue of the appointment, extend beyond 12 p.m. of the day preceding the first Monday of January next following the next general election.
People meeting the qualifications must complete an appointment application and waiver for the Governor’s Office.

The Lyon County Board of Commissioners issued the following statement:
A resolution of the Lyon County Board of Commissioners declaring a vacancy of County Commission District 5 due to the death of Commissioner Greg Hunewill.
Whereas, Lyon County Commissioner Greg Hunewill has held the District 5 seat of the Lyon County Board of Commissioners after being duly re-elected in November 2018; and Whereas, Commissioner Greg Hunewill died on August 19, 2019, and his unfortunate passing creates a vacancy in District 5;
Whereas, The Lyon County Board of Commissioners respectfully requests that The Honorable Steve Sisolak, Governor of the State of Nevada, appoint a person to fill the vacancy as outlined in NRS 244.040.
NOW, THEREFORE, let it be resolved by the Board of Lyon County Commissioners that the District 5 Seat of the Lyon County Commission is declared vacant and that the Board of Lyon Commissioners respectfully requests The Honorable Steve Sisolak, Governor of the State of Nevada to appoint a person to fill the vacancy as outlined in NRS 244.040 in an expedient and prudent manner.
