Rapid snowmelt prompts flood warning for portions of the Walker River
The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Flood Warning for the mainstem of the Walker River above Weber Reservoir. Flows along this portion of the river are expected to slowly rise this week and into the weekend in response to rapid snowmelt in the headwaters.
Minor to moderate flooding is expected to persist through the Mason Valley and downstream to Weber Reservoir for several weeks.
Meanwhile, a Flood Advisory remains in effect for the East and West Walker River and small streams draining high elevation terrain of the Eastern Sierra in Mono County through Saturday morning.
The Lyon County Road Department has opened self filling sandbag locations at the following locations:
Smith Valley: Dressler Park at the arena on Highway 208
Mason Valley: Lyon County Road Department Yard, 18 Highway 95A, Yerington
Mason Town Hall: Bridge Street in Mason
Well above normal temperatures will drive greater snowmelt though at least Thursday. Highest flows in unregulated rivers and streams are expected tonight and Thursday night. These flows may impact rural roads and recreation areas. Prepare now for flooding. Go here for the latest Flood Warning Statement.
Temperatures around the Carson City region will be in the upper 80s through the weekend with plenty of sunshine, according to the weather service.
