Lyon County group forms to address illegal dumping and promote ways to stop it
YERINGTON — Lyon County Code Enforcement held a meeting last week to address the problem of illegal dumping countywide. The Illegal Dumping Work Group, which represents a number of agencies and nonprofit organizations, will meet on a quarterly basis to continue collaboration and cooperation in its efforts to clean up areas where illegal dumping frequently happens.
County Manager Jeff Page remarked that he is very excited to see the cooperation of local government, state agencies, private business and not for profits to address the challenges of illegal dumping. He expressed his admiration for David Scott, Code Enforcement Officer, for bringing this group together.
At the Sept. 12 meeting, the working group identified goals to be worked on:
— Increasing public awareness of the problem, and encouraging the public to report illegal dumping when they see it happening.
— Getting community groups involved.
— Creating a Resource List for residents who may not be aware of where and how to properly dispose of their waste material.
— Partnering with Stericycle to include Household Hazardous Waste in community cleanup events.
— Encouraging the creation of “Community Pride” organizations that could pair volunteers with people who need help with cleanup
