Welcome to Thursday, Carson City. A storm’s coming in, so go out and have some fun before the snow shows up. Sing your heart out at Living the Good Life or Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar: it’s karaoke night. The Francis Humphrey Lecture Series returns to the Nevada State Museum with some freakish phenomenon found in the Black Rock Desert. Break a leg to the talented members of the Carson High Drama class performing at the Brewery Art Center. There will be three performances of ‘And Then They Came for Me,’ so don’t miss them in action.

The eighth annual Cowboy Mardi Gras fundraiser to benefit Austin’s House will be held on Friday, Feb. 26 at the Carson Valley Inn from 6 to 10 p.m. Put on your jeans and cowboy hat to celebrate the party atmosphere of Bourbon Street in New Orleans on Fat Tuesday. This casual and crazy fundraiser features great food, music, dancing, fun games, raffle prizes, and a silent auction. Carson City Toyota-Scion and Carson Valley Medical Center sponsor this year’s celebration.

Get your blood pumping today with a noon stroll with the Wellness Mile Walking Group at Carson Tahoe Hospital. It’s National Blood Donor Month: help your fellow Nevadans and donate some blood at Carson Mall where you’ll find the Bloodmobile parked near Dutch Bros. Coffee. We have some incredibly talented kids here in Carson City. The jazzier ones will be performing at the Community Center tonight with the Mile High Jazz Band in an extravaganza of music. For more than seven years Virginia City has been having fun with “Cemetery Gin” a Nevada-made spirit available at local saloons, bars and stores throughout Northern Nevada which celebrates a tall tale from the Comstock’s rich mining days of the 1850s.

Spearheaded by the Virginia City Tourism Commission, the gin is a product of Frey Ranch Estate Distillery, located in Fallon, Nev., where all the ingredients were grown, distilled and bottled.

It’s finally Friday, my fellow Carsonistas. I don’t know what tickles your particular fancy, so I just make sure I’ve got everything listed that I can find. It’s a living history kind of day with presentations all around. Head up to the Gold Hill Hotel for their weekly lecture series, but don’t forget to make a reservation. The Historical Society of Douglas County discusses the facts and fiction behind Lucky Bill at the Cultural Center and Museum in Gardnerville. The Nevada Division of the Pony Express Association keeps history alive and you are welcome to attend their monthly meeting at Grandma Hattie’s tonight. Pay homage to your favorite singers of yesteryear with karaoke at Living the Good Life or Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar.

Brave the chilly January air with an easy walk along the V and T Rail Trail at the north end of town. The weekly walk, sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Department, heads to the new MAC center in case of wet weather. Learn more about this crazy weather at Sierra Place Senior Living with a presentation by weather historian Mark McLaughlin. Don't miss the Mile High Jazz Band at Comma Coffee tonight. History lovers will want to head up to Virginia City for a lecture at St. Mary's of the Mountain Catholic Church.

Afterwards, head across the street to Browser’s Corner Book Store to take advantage of their half-off sale. Good luck to all the kids trying out for Wild Horse Children’s Theaters next performance. THURSDAY:

Bring some art into your new year with one of our many art exhibits. The Nevada Artist Association has just switched up their gallery and has a New Year’s show to offer you. The group also works with the Carson Visitor Bureau and showcases a different artist each month in the Visitors’ Center: currently Bob Hickox. Comma Coffee is hosting a reception this evening for the January artist in their revolving Backseat Gallery, so head down at 5 p.m. for some finger food and the unveiling.

A lot of people will tell you it’s never a good idea to play with fire, but for the folks of Controlled Burn, fire can be art. A new community practice group is starting up at A to Zen and everyone is welcome to come learn what it takes to dance with fire. The Carson City Classical Cinema Club is growing and has moved its monthly movie viewings to the Black Box Theater at the Brewery Arts Center. If you aren’t a member yet, it is just five dollars to enjoy Prince and the Pauper tonight.

Wine Walkers look forward to the first Saturday every month, where friends and family meet in downtown Carson City and delight each other with warm smiles that make forgetting the frigid temperatures a little easier.

The monthly tradition continues with the Downtown Business Association wine walk. Saturday, Jan. 2, the festivities begin at 1 p.m. This event happens rain, snow, or shine, so bundle up and head out to celebrate a new year with your friends and neighbors.

It’s the first weekend of the year, and so it’s time for the downtown wine walk. The monthly tradition is a great way to meet others from around town. Kids will want to head to the Community Center for the Elks Lodge Hoop Shoot. The best shooters in the state will advance to the national competition in Chicago for a chance at scholarship money.

We’ve made it, Carson City! Today is the last day of 2015, so get your resolutions handy. I’ve got your usual list of all that’s going on in town, organized by start time, but I’ve grouped all of the New Year’s festivities together at the bottom. If you’re looking for a little extra luck in 2016 try wearing red underwear, having a stocked pantry before the day is done, and having cash in your hand when the clock strikes twelve.
