John Bullis column: Trust decanting to save income tax

The last legislative session provided for changes in the Nevada trust laws and the governor signed the bill June 10. The main goal was to change the basic estate planning trust so the ultimate beneficiaries pay less income tax.

A trust is decanted when the trustee distributes assets from the first or original trust to a new, different trust, with different terms. You can decant wine by pouring the wine from the old, original bottle to a new bottle, leaving behind any sediment in the old bottle.

Carson City sheriff’s arrest log: Man jailed for felony child abuse and domestic battery

A 42-year-old Carson City man was arrested Thursday on suspicion of felony child abuse and domestic battery with a prior conviction after allegedly punching and threatening to kill his wife in front of their three children, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

The clock is ticking for last minute shoppers. Luckily, Carson City has great options for everyone on the list. Telegraph Square in downtown will be hopping with a Santa parade, vendors, and a pirate ship, in addition to great shops. The Brewery Arts Center is hosting a weekend-long art sale with one of a kind options throughout the campus. Art is a great gift, and making it is even more fun. Carson City Pottery is holding an open house today; a gift certificate for a pottery class is perfect for all skill levels.

My snow dance worked! The weather should start clearing up for the next few days, so the roads should be clear. There’s no need to leave our valley though, great things are happening. The annual Share Your Christmas food drive goes on for most of the day: you don’t even need to leave your car, just drive up to the Governor’s Mansion, and someone will get your donation to the right place. Unwind, decompress and relax at a number of our great bars and restaurants.

Jazz and poetry return to Comma Coffee: the monthly performance of the Mile High Jazz Band begins at 7:30 p.m.

The weekend was jam-packed with holiday cheer: Silver and Snowflakes, the Holiday Crawl, craft fairs, and the Railroad Museum’s Santa Train. Monday’s offer some fun times, as well, with swing dancing at El Charro’s or karaoke at the Firkin and Fox. Shopping and wine await at 'Ladies Night Out' at the Holiday Inn Express in Minden. It's a benefit for the Family Support Council of Douglas County.

Happy Sunday. There’s still plenty of weekend left. Craft fairs at Carson Lanes and the Carson Colony are sure to have something for that hard to buy for person on your list. Fight the chill with chili at the Carson Bulldog Wrestling Club’s Chili Cook-off at Yogurt Beach. Sing some holiday songs at the Holiday Karaoke Sing-along Party at the Carson City Library. Dayton lights up its tree tonight at ‘Our Park,’ so dress in your ugliest sweater and enjoy some hot chocolate and cookies at their ‘Small Town Christmas’ celebration.

Have you been naughty or nice this year? You’ll have no problem finding Jolly Old St. Nick this weekend. At Debug Computers where, in exchange for a donation to Holiday with a Hero, you can get a photo with the man in red. The Santa Train at the Nevada State Railroad Museum is a good place to grab a candy cane, some hot cocoa, and tell him what you’d like to find under the tree. Photographs with Santa are available at the Carson Mall Wednesday through Sunday. Genoa’s annual Breakfast with Santa has three seatings beginning at 8:30 a.m.

Carson Valley Pops and Voices of the Sierra Choir to present free winter concert

Get your family in the holiday spirit and join Conductor Bill Zabelsky and Assistant Conductor Stephanie Reynolds as they lead the Carson Valley Pops Orchestra on Dec. 12 at 7 p.m. for an evening of seasonal music and song.

The free Annual Winter Concert at the CVIC Hall will feature such pieces as “Carole of the Bells, “Sleigh Ride” and “Polar Express.” A sing along of holiday favorites with the Voices of the Sierra Choir is also planned.

Bundle up and head to Gardnerville for the Christmas Kick-off at Heritage Park with Santa, a tree lighting, and fireworks if the weather cooperates. Empty Bowls is hosting a preview night at the First Presbyterian Church; for a donation of $25 or more you get first pick of the handmade bowls that members of the community have made and decorated over the past year, and that includes admission to the soup fest tomorrow.
