If you are looking for a good day trip north of Carson City, with plenty of opportunities to fish, photograph, sightsee or shop, climb aboard and take a ride with stops along the way as you head to Plumas County.

Ready, set, GO! Whether you want to watch camels race, or hot air balloons light up the sky, this is a great weekend in Northern Nevada. If cool cars are more your style, join the Freaks of Nature Car Club at a show and shine in the parking lot of Yogurt Beach in North Carson. It’s root, root, root for the home team as the WNC Wildcats play a double header at Harvey Field.

Many of us will never forget where we were when we first heard about the hijacking and subsequent attacks on the World Trade Center. September 11, 2001 is burned into our collective memory. At 8:30 a.m. this morning there will be a memorial service at the 9/11 Memorial in Mills Park where an I-beam from the fallen towers now serves as a reminder. Even if you cannot make it to the ceremony, please take a moment of silence to remember.

Today, being hungry can be helpful. A benefit for fallen Deputy Carl Howell takes place today at Betsy’s Café inside Slot World with all café proceeds going to his family. This afternoon you can beat the heat and support the Western Nevada College Foundation at Yogurt Beach. The long weekend is over, and we won’t have another three day weekend until Nevada Day. Weather is heating back up, so at least it won’t feel like autumn, just yet. If you want to break out of your routine, try swing dancing. Beginners lessons are taught on Tuesdays at El Charro Avita. If country is more your thing, Carson Lanes offers lessons on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Jazz and Poetry at Comma Coffee with the Mile High Jazz Band is sure to be a good time.

Time for another wine walk, Carson City, thanks to the Downtown Business Association. Saturday, Sept. 5, the festivities begin at 1 p.m.

Grab a wine glass, map, and hand stamp at the Carson Nugget, Cactus Jack’s, Carson Jewelry and Loan, Touched by an Angel, or Bella Fiore. You have until 5 p.m. to hit as many stops as possible before the raffle begins. Every first Saturday over 30 shops, restaurants, businesses, and organizations stock up on wine and goodies and throw open their doors to the crowds of merry-makers. It's always a great reason to explore downtown.

Meet some of Carson City’s finest artist on Saturday, Sept. 12 between 1-4 p.m. at the Carson City Chamber’s Artisan Store located at 1900 S. Carson Street.

Labor Day weekend always seems bittersweet. Sure, it’s a three day weekend and a great time to bar-be-que, camp, or enjoy friends and family. It also marks the end of the summer. Everyone has gone back to school, and the autumn crisp is beginning to sneak in. No matter where you roam this weekend: north, south, east, or west there is fun to be had. Or stick around town and enjoy the many things that make Carson City unique.

Carson City:

• Treasure hunt on Saturday at the Carson City Historical Society Rummage and Yard Sale at the Forman-Roberts House Museum at 1207 N. Carson St. Free tours of the museum will also be available during the 9am-4pm event.
• Take a ride on the Virginia and Truckee #25 Steam Engine at the Nevada State Train Museum Friday through Monday.

The Carson Nugget in Carson City is kicking off a series of free outdoor concerts at the historic Laxalt Plaza adjacent to the Carson Nugget Casino beginning Saturday, Sept. 5, Labor Day Weekend. The first band in the series will be Mo’z Motley Blues Band who entertained during Taste of Downtown. They have a strong local following due to their versatility and infectious stage performance.

Feel like dancing, Carson City? Living the Good Life has gone country for the evening with DJ Bobby G spinning your favorite western songs. If you need to brush up on your line dancing skills, Beercade is the place to go for free lessons. It takes two to tango, but you don’t need a partner to learn to salsa at El Charro Avita tonight. If you’re more song and less dance, you can choose from Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar or the Feisty Goat Pub for karaoke. Fandango kicks off a month of Throwback Thursdays tonight with crooner Rick Radecki singing hits from yesteryear.

September has arrived, and with it a hint of autumn to come. The nights are starting to get chilly, so sweaters, scarves, and pumpkin everything are on the way. Crisp fall evenings are perfect for movie watching. Develop a love of old movies with the Carson City Classic Cinema Club. They meet tonight at Red’s Old 395 and will be watching noir classic ‘Suddenly’ with Frank Sinatra. Or kick up your heels and head to Carson Lanes for some line dancing.

This last weekend of August is filled with ways to celebrate your community. Carson Animal Shelter Initiative, better known as CASI, hosts their annual Bark, Whine, and Dine Fundraiser at Fuji Park. Animal lovers can also head to Carson Catalina Apartments for a rummage sale that benefits the Carson Tahoe SPCA. The Carson City Sheriff's Office young Explorers will host a fundraising car wash; The Marine Corp League can be found at the north Carson Walmart; half of the donations received will go to Deputy Howell’s family fund. And don’t miss out on the drought-friendly water balloon ice bucket challenge raising funds for ALS at Butler Meats on Sunday.

If you’d rather be the entertaining one, then sign up to sing at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar or at the Feisty Goat Pub: it’s Karaoke night. Get your country fix at Beercade, and learn to line dance. Learn about bats and their habitat at the monthly Francis Humphry Lecture at the Nevada State Museum. If you already know it all, Trivia Night at Alatte Coffee and Wine Bar in the Carson Nugget might be for you.

Landscape photography by Linda Arnn Arteno will be showing throughout the month of September in Comma Coffee's "Backseat Gallery." With a reception on Wednesday, Sept. 2, 5 to 7 p.m. There will be snacks, desserts and coffee provided, as well as beer and wine available for sale.

Linda Arnn Arteno is a landscape photographer based in Northern Nevada. Her passion for the beauty that surrounds her has taken her all over the West, exploring the Pacific coast, deserts, mountain peaks, National and State parks and everything in between.

Summer days are perfect for a walk in the park, or among any one of Carson City’s many paths. There is the Parks and Recreation easy walk in the morning, or the Muscle Powered Conditioning hike in the afternoon. These happen every Tuesday and the location always varies, so you get the chance to explore various trails in our valley. Get your swing on at Eagle Valley Golf Course. It’s Ladies night, so you get some instruction, a few holes, and refreshment.

Hold on to your hats, Carson City, summer isn’t ready to quit us just yet. An aviation air show at the Minden Airport, the coin show and fair at the Nevada State Museum, and a fishing derby for the kids at Little Washoe Lake are only the tip of the iceberg. The Pavilion at Mills Park is where you’ll find the annual Carson High Football Boosters Fundraising BBQ. The Quicksilver Dog Agility Trials are always fun to watch, and they’ll be at Fuji Park all weekend. Carson Lanes has family fun indoors and out all day long during their Bowling Blast-off.

The mood has been somber in Carson City this week. The news of Sheriff Deputy Carl Howell’s shooting death has rallied the community, beginning with a large candlelight vigil held last Saturday at the Capitol. Today the officer will be laid to rest after a funeral service at the Reno Convention Center. A procession will leave the Carson City Courthouse at 9 a.m. and travel north along Carson Street. Various fundraisers have begun for the wife and four children that Howell leaves behind. For more information on the procession and how to donate, please go here and here.

Ben Crocker has the music of between 250 and 300 arrangements stored on compact discs, which he uses in place of a band while he plays his guitar and sings. But when it came time to organize those songs into some kind of working order, he wasn’t sure where to start.

Motown and art hit the stage today at the Community Center as part of the ongoing Jazz and Beyond festival. Well, the CCAI art show and sale opens at 5 p.m. in the theater lobby. The Carson Animal Shelter Initiative has a meeting this evening, and there is sure to be a lot to cover. Their major fundraiser, ‘Bark, Whine, and Dine,’ hits Fuji Park on August 29.

It’s a blast from the past weekend. Get started with some history at the Dangberg Home Historic Ranch with the Naughty Tea Mistresses. A walking tour of our haunted past begins at the corner of Third and Curry with the Downtown Ghost Walk. Celebrate Prohibition-style at the Brewery Arts Center: the annual Speakeasy Swing Dance Party wants to see you in your finest zoot suit or flapper dress. Head back to the Eighties at Living the Good Life; DJ Bobby G is spinning the hits from yesteryear.

What a great day in Carson City! Jazz and Beyond continues with Stereo Galaxy at Third and Carson, an outdoor concert at the new Brewery Art Center Minnesota Street Stage, and a special event at the Governor’s Mansion with the Horse Crazy Cowboy Band. Unleash your inner artist at Comma Coffee’s ‘Paint, Drink, and Be Merry’ or at the Senior Center with a special watercolor painting fundraiser. Pop Warner is looking for your support; head over to Governor’s Field for Friday Night Lights. Take a gander at the whole list, there’s something for everyone today.

I love August in Carson City and it’s because of Jazz and Beyond. Music everywhere. The Tahoe Ridge Winery is hosting Jazz Van Gogh, a guitar and flute duo. You’ll enjoy some time in the evening sun at the Comma Coffee Courtyard with Brent Johnson and The Call Up listening to some bluesy roots rock. You won’t want to miss Carl Sonny Leland at the Performance Hall of the Brewery Arts Center. The boogie-woogie hall of famer will show you what fun can be had with a piano. Van Gogh & Vino, an open art studio where participants of all skills and abilities can sip wine, socialize and paint works of art with friends, family and co-workers, will relocated from Carson Valley to a 2,000 square foot studio in Carson City by Red's Old 395 Grill and the new Tahoe Ridge Winery. Owner Teresa Sexton made the announcement Wednesday on Facebook.

Cindy Southerland, Carson City's cemetery historian and author, will be at Morley's Books on the Wine Walk, Saturday Sept. 5 from 1 pm to 5 pm. Books will be on sale and author will appear in widow's weeds ... see you there!
