More than 600 students attend first ever Northern Nevada Construction Career Day
Submitted by editor on Wed, 10/26/2016 - 8:10amMore than 600 middle and high school students stepped off their buses, picked up their new bright green backpacks and spent the morning experiencing the construction trades with hands-on demonstrations, exhibits and meeting with area colleges and apprenticeship programs at the first ever Northern Nevada Construction Career Day held at the Livestock Event Center in Reno on Tuesday.

Head to the first floor of the courthouse to earn your 'I Voted' sticker now; early voting continues until Nov. 4. Another way to make your voice heard today is by attending the Arts Town Hall sponsored by the Nevada Arts Association. They are looking for the ways that arts and culture can be improved in the Carson City area, among other things. While the mornings can be chilly, a walk with Muscle Powered along the Freeway Multi-use Path will get your blood pumping.

The holidays come rolling along quickly after that. For those who need some help this Thanksgiving, you can sign up for a food basket at the Salvation Army. A Holiday Craft Show at Browsers Corner Bookstore will give you a head start on that gift list; consider a Friends of the Carson City Library Membership for your more bookish friends. The World Championship doesn’t begin until tomorrow, so get your sports fix with the Texans/Broncos match-up in tonight’s Monday Night Football game.

Nevada Governor Sandoval declares October Careers in Construction Month

The proclamation was issued, in part, due to the work done by BuildNV, an outreach arm of the Nevada Construction Collaborative to “narrow the skills gap by guiding Nevada’s youth and displaced workers toward training and opportunities that lead to long-term, rewarding careers in construction.”

Carson City Weather: Second round of strong winds arriving today with rain and Sierra snow

There’s also concern that rain could cause flash flooding in the Little Valley Fire area in Washoe Valley and Emerald Fire area at south shore Lake Tahoe.

The moisture is a welcome help to our heroic firefighters in Lake Tahoe and Washoe Valley. Because of the wet weather and the recent fires, some activities have been postponed: most notably the Advocates to End Domestic Violence’s Annual Light After Dark Run. There are still plenty of things to occupy your time, but the weather may force more cancellations.

Carson City weather: Winds to ease tonight and return Saturday with valley rain, mountain snow

A High Wind Warning remains in effect until 5 p.m. today. Another strong wind event is anticipated Saturday ahead of a storm system that is expected to bring valley rain and high mountain snow, providing some relief to fires burning in nearby Washoe Valley and at south shore Lake Tahoe.
