Carson City Weather: Showers likely Thursday into Friday, mostly sunny by Nevada Day
After a couple of small systems with limited moisture move through the region into Tuesday, a wetter system is expected to reach the Sierra and Carson City region late Thursday into Friday, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.
Its trajectory and subtropical nature will result in higher precipitation efficiency as well as very high snow levels from 9,500 to 11,000 feet based on current projections. Consequently, there will be quite a bit of spill-over into Western Nevada which is usually rain-shadowed.
In this early on in the forecast, the weather service said Monday that in Carson City there's a 20 percent chance of showers Thursday, a chance of rain Thursday night and rain likely on Friday with daytime highs in the upper 50s. This may bring some outdoor events planned for downtown Carson City indoors. We will provide updates on any venue changes if the weather system moves through town.
By Saturday the system is expected to move out, with with sunny skies and clearing in time for Nevada Day festivities celebrated in Carson City. Saturday's high temperature is expected to be near 60.
The weather service notes that as of Monday, the model projections favor locations south of Highway 50 for the higher end of rainfall totals. The focus for moisture may shift over the next few days, so some changes are expected. Forecaster confidence in these numbers and location of heaviest rain are medium at this time.
Preliminary rainfall estimates are generally 1-3 inches in the Sierra and 0.25-1 inch along the Sierra Front into the Basin and Range.
Impacts should be limited to locations that are prone to flooding like recent burn scars. There will not be much wind with this system due to its southwest to northeast track and subtropical nature.
